The PRCR Department plays a leading role in the quality of life and character of the Capital City. With nearly 10,000 acres of land, 220 parks, and 120 miles of greenway trails, the Department provides a wide range of facilities, amenities, and programs that support the social, cultural, mental and physical well-being of citizens. The Department is guided by a comprehensive 20- year System Plan that identifies the overall vision of Bringing People to Parks and Parks to People.
As a part-time Grounds Service Specialist, you'll play a hands-on role in caring for 34 parks on over 230 acres across District 4, including some of Raleigh's most beloved spaces like Laurel Hills Park, the Sassafras All Children's Playground, Fred Fletcher Park, Ridge Road Pool, Isabella Canon Park, Jaycee Park and others. District 4 Grounds team includes 11 members: a crew supervisor, foreman, maintenance technician, part- and full-time grounds workers, part-and full-time gardeners, and one seasonal grounds worker.

The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys working outdoors and takes pride in creating safe, clean, and beautiful spaces for the community. They are reliable, punctual, and safety-conscious, with a strong work ethic and attention to detail. This person communicates well, works effectively as part of a team, and demonstrates excellent customer service when interacting with park visitors or volunteers. They are comfortable operating landscaping equipment, performing routine maintenance, and handling physically demanding tasks.
Above all, they have a positive attitude, adaptability, and a genuine passion for serving the public and enhancing Raleigh's parks.
* Perform routine landscaping such as mowing, edging, blowing, trimming, pruning, weeding, and leaf removal. Operation of machinery, including Zero-Turn mower, tractor, string trimmer, edger, and backpack blower. Operation of snow-removal equipment to maintain sidewalks, parking lots, and driveways.
* Plant and maintain greenery, including watering and pruning trees and shrubs.
* Preventative maintenance of equipment by replacing worn parts, sharpening blades, and greasing machinery.
* Assist in seasonal and inclement weather events, which may require extended hours and weekends.
* Work collaboratively with volunteer groups to support park projects. Participate in team building activities. Attend all required safety trainings.
High School Diploma or GED and one year of maintenance or customer service experience related to assignment.
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
Knowledge of basic landscaping and grounds maintenance and equipment operation and safety.
Attention to detail ensuring parks are clean, safe, and visually appealing.
Communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with team members and the public.
Ability to perform heavy work, including lifting up to 100 lbs. and working outdoors in a variety of conditions.
Consistently show up on time and with a strong work ethic.
Hours
Monday - Friday; 7:00 am - 3:30pm (Fall/Winter/Spring); 6:00 am - 2:30 pm (Summer)

Positions in this class typically require stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Heavy Work:
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dust, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise.
