Transportation Maintenance Worker - Landscaping

We are seeking a dependable and motivated Transportation Maintenance Worker - Landscaping to support the maintenance and appearance of transportation corridors and public rights-of-way. This position focuses on landscaping, vegetation control, and grounds maintenance to ensure safe, clean, and visually appealing roadways and facilities.

Joining our Transportation Maintenance Division will provide an exciting opportunity to play a vital role in the maintenance of critical infrastructure such as sidewalks, curb and gutter, asphalt, medians, and storm drains. As a member of our 222-person staff, you will contribute to maintenance of 1,130 miles of streets and sidewalks; the upkeep of over 33,000 curb ramps; and the protection of 3.2 million linear feet of stormwater pipes connecting more than 32,000 drainage inlets.

Within the Landscape Maintenance Unit you will be part of a team responsible for maintaining medians and rights-of-way throughout the City by trimming trees, bushes, and grass, and planting various trees and plants each season.

* Operates various types of small equipment and hand tools including walk behind leaf machine for leaf collection

* Performs unskilled or semi-skilled general maintenance and landscaping maintenance

* Follows established safety policies, procedures and applicable codes and regulations while performing job duties

* Selects proper maintenance tools and equipment for tasks

This role will be required to work extended hours on rotating shifts during leaf collection, emergencies, and inclement weather.

Education and Experience:

High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency;
Less than 1 year experience in construction, maintenance or related work

OR

Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted

Licenses or

Certifications:

* Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire

Knowledge of:

* Operating various types of small equipment

* Occupational hazards and applicable safety principles

* Uses and properties of supplies and equipment

* Applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations

Skill in:

* Customer service

* Attention to detail to perform tasks accurately

Ability to:

* Navigate roads and maps

Medium:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Work Environment:

Work is typically performed in an outdoor environment or in and around moving traffic. Employees may occasionally work in or around construction sites.

Work Exposures:

There is frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. Employees may occasionally interact with individuals who are hostile or irate, extreme cold (below 32 degrees), extreme heat (above 100 degrees) communicable diseases, toxic or caustic chemicals or substances, loud noises such as jack hammers, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, construction.
