Construction Inspector

The Construction Inspector performs roadway inspection and quality assurance testing for transportation construction projects in North Carolina, ensuring compliance with NCDOT standards, specifications, and project requirements. This role focuses heavily on asphalt and materials testing, accurate documentation, and effective communication with project stakeholders while maintaining a strong commitment to safety and quality.

Responsibilities
  • Perform roadway inspection and quality assurance testing in accordance with NCDOT standards, specifications, and project requirements.
  • Conduct asphalt density testing and related field testing activities using appropriate gauges and equipment.
  • Carry out materials testing for roadway construction, including asphalt and concrete inspection as required.
  • Document testing results, inspection observations, and quality assurance activities accurately and completely.
  • Communicate findings, test results, and inspection issues clearly with project managers, contractors, and agency representatives.
  • Maintain testing equipment, including density gauges, ensuring proper calibration, cleanliness, and operational readiness.
  • Follow company safety policies and procedures at all times while working on active construction sites and in the field.
  • Assist with project reporting and recordkeeping requirements, including preparation of detailed reports and maintenance of accurate records.
  • Apply familiarity with NCDOT specifications, testing procedures, and documentation requirements to daily inspection and testing tasks.
  • Support quality management efforts by identifying potential issues, recommending corrective actions, and promoting continuous improvement.
  • Travel to various project sites as needed and work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team focused on delivering exceptional engineering, environmental, and construction materials testing services.
Essential Skills
  • Current NCDOT QMS Roadway Technician Certification.
  • Current NCDOT QMS Density Gauge Technician Certification.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Prior experience in roadway construction inspection, materials testing, or quality management.
  • Strong verbal communication skills for interacting with project managers, contractors, and agency representatives.
  • Strong written communication skills for preparing detailed reports and maintaining accurate records.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in various and sometimes adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to work safely on active construction sites, following established safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to travel to project sites as needed within North Carolina.
  • Familiarity with NCDOT standards, specifications, testing procedures, and documentation requirements.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail in inspection, testing, documentation, and equipment calibration.
  • Capability to maintain and operate density gauges and other testing equipment reliably and safely.
Additional

Skills & Qualifications
  • NCDOT Conventional Density Technician Certification (preferred but not required).
  • Experience with concrete inspection and civil construction projects.
  • Knowledge of transportation construction practices and roadway inspections.
  • Background in construction inspection and quality assurance for infrastructure projects.
  • Understanding of quality management principles applied to construction materials testing.
  • Familiarity with ACI-related concepts and standards for concrete (preferred).
  • Ability to contribute to a culture of safety, integrity, and professional growth.
  • Interest in career advancement within engineering, environmental, or construction materials testing services.
  • Commitment to working within a team dedicated to quality, innovation, and excellence in infrastructure delivery.
Work Environment

This role is based in North Carolina and involves working primarily on active transportation construction sites. The Construction Inspector works outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and other environmental factors typical of roadway projects. The position requires regular travel to different project locations as needed. Work is performed around heavy equipment, construction crews, and testing devices such as density gauges and other materials testing equipment, with a strong emphasis on safety practices and adherence to established procedures.
