Essential Job Duties

This position will assist with fieldwork, lab work, and data management for a study on the distribution and population density of the frosted elfin butterfly, a rare species proposed for listing as an endangered species.

Primary fieldwork duties will occur in Holly Shelter Gamelands in Pender County. Example duties include surveying sites for frosted elfin butterfly presence and abundance; measuring habitat and environmental variables; observing and handling butterflies for demographic experiments and surveys. Example lab duties include estimating floral nectar production. Example data management duties include data entry. The person in this position may also contribute to outreach and communication activities related to the frosted elfin.

This position will run from March 15, 2026 – September 15, 2026. Lodging will be provided in Hampstead from March 15 through June 15. For the remainder of the appointment, the position will be based on the main campus of NCSU, and the employee will be responsible for securing their own housing.

Work Schedule:

20–40 hrs per week between 8–5, Monday–Friday. Flexibility to accommodate weather and the biology of the study organism will be required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • B.S. in Wildlife Biology, Entomology, Biology or equivalent
  • Experience working with live insects
  • Experience identifying butterflies and/or caterpillars
Required License or Certification

  • Valid NC Driver's License required
