Position: Computational Scientist 2

At PNNL, our core capabilities are divided among major departments that we refer to as Directorates within the Lab, focused on a specific area of scientific research or other function, with its own leadership team and dedicated budget.

Our Science & Technology directorates include National Security, Earth and Biological Sciences, Physical and Computational Sciences, and Energy and Environment. In addition, we have an Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a Department of Energy, Office of Science user facility housed on the PNNL campus.

The Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate's (PCSD's) strengths in experimental, computational, and theoretical chemistry and materials science, together with our advanced computing, applied mathematics and data science capabilities, are central to the discovery mission we embrace  our most important resource is our people-experts across the range of scientific disciplines who team together to take on the biggest scientific challenges of our time.?

The Advanced Computing, Mathematics, and Data Division (ACMDD) focuses on basic and applied computing research encompassing artificial intelligence,?applied mathematics, computing technologies, and data and computational engineering. Our scientists and engineers apply end-to-end co-design principles to advance future energy-efficient computing systems and design the next generation of algorithms to analyze, model, understand, and control the behavior of complex systems in science, energy, and national security.

Responsibilities

The Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate (PCSD) researchers lead major R&D efforts in experimental and theoretical interfacial chemistry, chemical analysis, high energy physics, interfacial catalysis, multifunctional materials, and integrated high-performance and data-intensive computing.

PCSD is PNNL's primary steward for research supported by the Department of Energy's Offices of Basic Energy Sciences, Advanced Scientific Computing Research, and Nuclear Physics, all within the Department of Energy's Office of Science.

Additionally, Directorate staff perform research and development for private industry and other government agencies, such as the Department of Defense and NASA. The Directorate's researchers are members of interdisciplinary teams tackling challenges of national importance that cut across all missions of the Department of Energy.

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Computational Mathematics group is seeking candidates for a Computational Scientist 2. The Computational Mathematics Group has strong capabilities in multiscale mathematics, uncertainty quantification, parameter estimation, and data-driven methods. In addition to developing new computational methods, our group members collaborate closely with physical scientists and engineers in various disciplines such as Earth system modeling, materials science, energy storage and chemistry.

Develop physics-based computational tools for modeling complex systems with multiple spatial/temporal scales.

Develop scientific machine learning methods to enhance our understanding and prediction capabilities of complex systems.

Develop and optimize high-performance numerical algorithms for large-scale scientific computing.

Interact, communicate, and solve problems with a diverse team of applied mathematics, computational science, and experimental research staff within the group and across PNNL.

Publish your results in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals.

Present your research at technical conferences and project and program review meetings.

Participate in the development of research proposals.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 2 years of relevant experience
    -OR-
  • MS/MA
    -OR-
  • PhD

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, Physics or a related Engineering area with postdoctoral experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in at least one of the following technical areas: (i) Multiscale/Multiphysics Modeling (ii) Traditional scientific computing (iii) Scientific machine learning.
  • Learning (iv) High-Performance Computing (HPC).

Proficiency in developing scientific software using C/C++, FORTRAN, CUDA, and Python.

Experience developing high-performance parallel computing code for both CPUs and GPUs.

Proven track record in preparing manuscript submissions to scientific journals.
