Overview

Research Specialist
- Crespo (PG195036SP)

Department of Population Health and Pathobiology, Raleigh, NC.

Work Schedule:

Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm; additional hours may be required.

Salary Range: $45,000 – $50,000 per year.

Responsibilities Research Support
  • Assist in experiments, procedures, and tests as part of scientific research.
  • Observe and measure study subjects and test variables according to protocols; prepare subjects for procedures and collect samples.
  • Prepare standard media, reagents, and chemical solutions used for testing.
  • Perform basic molecular diagnostic assays, serologic and antigen detection assays, and microbial isolation steps; prepare tissue samples for histology.
  • Analyze data, identify trends, troubleshoot experimental variances, and interpret results.
  • Contribute to manuscripts by drafting technical methodologies.
Lab Management
  • Maintain laboratory organization, sample inventories, and freezer storage.
  • Track and manage chemical and supply inventories; handle procurement and formulate complex stock solutions.
  • Maintain rigorous standards for laboratory hygiene and ensure sterilization processes.
  • Enforce biohazard disposal protocols and comply with laboratory safety requirements.
  • Manage equipment maintenance schedules and perform quality control audits.
  • Record and coordinate laboratory protocols; assist with scheduling for students and visiting researchers.
Mentorship & Collaboration
  • Assist with the distance learning project for Poultry Medicine certification, including translation between Spanish and English, faculty selection, and technical support.
  • Support graduate and undergraduate research projects and participate in student teaching and laboratory instruction.
  • Collaborate with the research team to advance Dr. Rocio Crespo’s laboratory objectives; act as primary liaison for the Clinical Studies Core and external laboratories to facilitate clinical trials.
Other Responsibilities
  • Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on organizational needs and evolving priorities.
Qualifications Minimum Experience / Education

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Laboratory & Field Expertise: Strong hands‑on experience in laboratory and field settings, working independently or collaboratively while strictly following established research protocols.
  • Animal Handling

    Skills:

    Practical experience handling poultry (chickens and turkeys).
  • Protocol & Publication Management: Proven track record of drafting, writing, and submitting IACUC protocols under PI direction, and experience in data analysis and manuscript preparation.
  • Organization & Communication: Exceptional organizational and record‑keeping skills, paired with strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Language Proficiency: Full proficiency in Spanish to enable effective communication in bilingual research environments.
