Position Summary

The Digital Archivist ensures that born digital special collections are successfully accessioned, preserved, and made accessible. The position reports to the Head of Archival Processing and works collaboratively across Wilson Special Collections Library, Library IT, and other stakeholders. The Digital Archivist works with library colleagues to establish and maintain policies and procedures related to born digital archives, including appraisal, intake, and digitization of media such as images, oral histories, documents, and other born digital archival materials.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in the review and appraisal of potential born digital acquisitions in all formats.
  • Coordinate the intake of newly acquired born digital archives, including migration from physical media, virus scanning, and PII removal.
  • Direct and maintain the digital intake lab, developing and updating workflows, ensuring adequate hardware and software, and training staff and graduate students.
  • Coordinate web and social media archiving efforts, train staff on web archiving tools (e.g., Archive-It), evaluate current work, and recommend new approaches.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Requires a Master’s in Library Science (MLS) degree or an equivalent advanced degree in a relevant field.

Required Qualifications , Competencies, and Experience
  • ALA‑accredited master’s degree in library or information science or an advanced degree in archives administration, preservation, digital curation, or a related field.
  • Recent work experience appraising, preserving, and providing access to digital collections.
  • Knowledge of standards and best practices in digital archives for formats typical of special collections.
  • Experience installing and managing tools for macOS and Windows used for digital archives intake and processing (e.g., Brunnhilde, Bulk Extension, ePADD, rsync, Homebrew, Pip).
  • Understanding of archival description theory and practices.
  • Ability to plan, manage, and complete multiple concurrent projects and communicate issues effectively.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse user communities, including students, faculty, researchers, and community members.
Preferred Qualifications , Competencies, and Experience
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience researching and implementing strategies for format normalization and migration.
  • Knowledge of or interest in post‑custodial approaches to digital archives.
  • Experience with technical workflow development and maintenance.
  • Experience with web archiving strategies and tools.
  • Experience creating archival description for born digital materials using repository systems such as Fedora or Hyrax.
  • Digital Archives certificate from the Society of American Archivists.
  • Experience communicating digital archives concepts and requirements to IT and non‑IT stakeholders.
  • Enthusiasm for sharing works in progress and contributing to the broader library and archives community.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements

Regular weekday onsite reference shifts required; occasional nights and weekends. Must be able to work in an environment with exposure to materials containing dust and mold. Occasional travel required.
