Public Safety Shift Supervisor
The Public Safety Shift Supervisor oversees daily shift operations within the Department of Public Safety, ensuring a safe and secure campus environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This role provides frontline leadership, supervises Public Safety Officers, and ensures the consistent application of policies, procedures, and emergency response protocols.
Essential duties and responsibilities include serving as the lead officer and primary point of contact for the assigned shift, directing officers and delegating tasks; conducting roll call briefings, assigning posts, and communicating priorities; monitoring officer activity for productivity, professionalism, and compliance; providing real-time coaching, guidance, and corrective direction as needed; ensuring proper staffing levels and adjusting assignments based on campus needs;
overseeing patrol operations (foot, vehicle, and fixed posts); ensuring visibility and proactive engagement across campus; monitoring access control, alarms, cameras, and emergency systems; responding to and overseeing all major incidents and calls for service; acting as the on-scene supervisor for critical incidents; coordinating response efforts until relieved by senior leadership or external agencies; ensuring proper documentation and reporting of all incidents;
serving as liaison with local law enforcement, fire, and EMS when necessary; mentoring and developing Public Safety Officers; assisting with onboarding and field training of new hires; reinforcing department standards, procedures, and customer service expectations; identifying performance gaps and recommending additional training; reviewing and approving incident reports for accuracy and completeness; preparing shift summaries and communicating key updates to leadership;
tracking and reporting safety trends, concerns, and operational issues; promoting a service-oriented approach to campus safety; ensuring positive, professional interactions with campus community members; de-escalating conflicts and supporting a welcoming campus environment; enforcing university policies, regulations, and applicable laws; ensuring adherence to Clery Act reporting requirements and campus safety standards; maintaining accountability for officer conduct and departmental expectations; and performing other Public Safety job-related duties and projects assigned.
Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent, 3–5 years of experience in campus safety, security, or law enforcement, demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience preferred, strong knowledge of emergency response procedures and incident management, excellent communication, report writing, and interpersonal skills, ability to make sound decisions under pressure, and possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license and good driving record.
Preferred qualifications include experience in higher education/public safety environment, prior supervisory or lead officer experience, familiarity with Clery Act and campus safety compliance standards, and certifications in CPR/AED, First Aid, or emergency management (e.g., ICS/NIMS).
