The Campus Security Officer is responsible for providing a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for students, employees, and visitors by protecting College property, preserving public safety, and supporting the orderly operation of the College. The position performs routine security patrols, responds to incidents and emergencies, enforces College policies and parking regulations, provides information and assistance to the campus community, and promotes a culture of safety through professional, ethical, and customer-focused service.
The Campus Security Officer is a non-sworn
, unarmed position and is not authorized to carry a firearm or exercise the powers of a certified law enforcement officer.
- Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide a visible security presence to promote a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for students, employees, visitors, and College property.
- Patrol College buildings, grounds, parking areas, and other College facilities on foot and by vehicle to identify safety hazards, security concerns, unauthorized activity, and policy violations.
- Respond to security incidents, alarms, medical emergencies, and requests for assistance; coordinate with law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical personnel as appropriate.
- Enforce College policies and parking regulations, monitor access to College facilities, and prepare incident reports, parking citations, and other required documentation.
- Assist with emergency preparedness activities, facility security, special events, traffic control, and campus evacuations as assigned.
- Provide courteous customer service by assisting students, employees, and visitors with information, directions, and routine non-emergency assistance.
- Maintain required certifications, participate in training, and perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One (1) year of experience in campus security, security services, law enforcement, military service, emergency response, public safety, or a closely related field.
- Valid North Carolina driver's license or the ability to obtain one within thirty (30) days of employment.
- Ability to successfully complete a criminal background check and meet all College employment requirements.
- Associate degree in Criminal Justice, Public Safety, Emergency Management, or a related field.
- Experience working in a college, university, school, healthcare, or other public service environment.
- Current certification in First Aid, CPR, and Automated External Defibrillator (AED), or the ability to obtain certification within a specified timeframe.
- Experience preparing incident reports and using security or public safety software.
- Knowledge of campus security principles, emergency response procedures, crime prevention practices, and applicable College policies.
- Knowledge of first aid, CPR, fire prevention, and emergency preparedness principles.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain professionalism, and respond effectively in stressful or emergency situations.
- Ability to prepare accurate reports, maintain records, and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish positive working relationships with students, employees, visitors, law enforcement, and community partners while providing excellent customer service.
- Ability to observe, assess, and report suspicious activity, safety hazards, and policy violations.
- Proficiency in the use of radios, security systems, surveillance equipment, computers, and standard office software.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple responsibilities, and maintain confidentiality.
Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments and requires frequent walking, standing, climbing stairs, operating a motor vehicle, and exposure to varying weather conditions. The position requires availability to work rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during emergency campus closures or special events, as assigned.
Physical RequirementsThe position requires the ability to walk, stand, climb stairs, bend, reach, stoop, and sit for extended periods; communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and by radio; operate motor vehicles, computers, and standard office equipment; occasionally lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds; and respond quickly to emergency situations.
