Public Safety Officer
Position Title:
Public Safety Officer
The Public Safety Officer provides personal, equipment, and real property security for faculty, staff, students, and visitors within an assigned area of the University's campus. The Public Safety Officer provides basic public assistance services as needed and performs routine security and public safety patrol duties within the assigned area. Public Safety Officers are expected to remain alert to emergency situations, provide first-line responses, and enforce procedural rules and regulations.
Essential duties and responsibilities include patrolling assigned areas on foot to ensure personnel, building, and equipment security; checking of people entering facilities; denying entry to persons who cannot show proper identification or cause for being admitted; providing information and directions; explaining rules and regulations; maintaining logs and records of occurrences, completing necessary paperwork, and using computer terminal to input and retrieve data;
examining doors and windows to ensure security; locking and unlocking numerous buildings on campus; monitoring closed buildings for unauthorized persons and/or suspicious activities; informing and warning violators of rule infractions; maintaining working knowledge of the locations of various departments, buildings, access routes, and admitting requirements; watching for and investigating and reporting irregularities; contacting emergency responders as required; remaining alert for the presence of unauthorized persons;
approaching suspicious persons and notifying police; confronting and detaining violators until police arrive; performing periodic checks of campus lighting conditions to ensure proper functioning; patrolling and monitoring assigned parking areas to provide public security and assistance; preparing routine, standardized reports; monitoring and authorizing entrance and departure of employees, visitors, and other persons to guard against theft and maintain security of premises;
dealing politely and courteously with a diverse campus population in a professional manner; routinely providing escort service to staff and visitors; delivering materials to offices as needed; providing motor vehicle assistance to staff and/or visitors; responding to all alarm activations and investigating cause; assisting in conducting fire drills within the University; responsible for enforcing all parking regulations and traffic control;
responsible for the collection of lost and found items and producing the proper documentation and location of the owner of property when possible; working collaboratively and effectively with a diverse population of students, employees, visitors, and guests; performing other job-related duties and projects assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma and three years of related experience in public safety. Must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license and good driving record. Must successfully pass a background investigation. On-campus, in person with no possibility of remote work.
Preferred Qualifications:
Public Safety experience in a higher education setting.
Hours per week: 40/hrs. per week | Shifts Available: 1st Shift and 2nd Shift.
