Job Duties

NC State's Utilities Distribution team maintains and repairs essential systems that support research facilities, academic buildings, residence halls, and athletic spaces. Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, providing emergency response, and delivering in-house repair and installation services for steam, stormwater, chilled water, sanitary sewer, and domestic water systems. The technician will maintain and repair systems across NC State's Main, Centennial, and CBC campuses, performing mechanical and piping work, diagnostics, and repairs on steam tunnels, pump stations, heat exchangers, PRVs, and grease traps.

The role also supports new construction installations, renovations, and welding projects to ensure uninterrupted support for research, academic, and animal hospital facilities.

Key responsibilities (examples):

  • Diagnose and repair equipment such as fans, pumps, receivers, steam lines, condensate lines, and pressure-reducing stations
  • Inspect, maintain, and repair steam and hot water systems, including traps, strainers, expansion joints, and piping
  • Welding technologies for torch work; fabricate parts from blueprints, sketches, and verbal instructions
  • Install, operate, maintain, and rebuild mechanical pumps, PRVs, and related piping and equipment
  • Cut, thread, solder, and assemble piping; connect valves and test gas, water, sanitary, and storm lines; fix leaks
  • Test and certify backflow prev enters; conduct fire hydrant flow tests; inspect wastewater collection systems including grease traps
  • Conduct annual inspections of wastewater distribution systems and report findings
  • Align motors and pumps; install related equipment for steam generation and control
  • Serve as backup ORC for wastewater compliance; ensure permit adherence
  • Balance multiple priorities, address customer service needs, and foster stakeholder relationships
  • Lift and transport materials up to 150 pounds; perform physically demanding tasks; maintain safe handling
  • Stand for extended periods; work in confined spaces; climb ladders; may encounter insects or animals; perform essential tasks with/without accommodations
  • Effective verbal communication with supervisors and the public; follow verbal and written work instructions
Other Responsibilities
  • Hours may change to meet university needs
  • Subject to emergency call back, weekend work, and rotational on-call
  • Required to wear PPE: safety glasses, safety shoes, ear plugs; additional safety gear as needed

Qualifications Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated competency to perform the work. Some positions may require licenses or certifications. Optional guideline: trade-area experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in maintenance and operation of utility distribution systems (steam/condensate, chilled water, storm/sanitary sewer, potable water)
  • Experience in a university or municipal setting
  • Heavy equipment experience with excavators, backhoes, and compaction equipment
  • Experience with steam PRVs, motors, pumps, air compressors, fans, and water treatment programs
  • CDL (Commercial Driver's License) preferred
