Position: Automotive / Equipment Mechanic I or II

The Automotive / Equipment Mechanic I or II position performs complex skilled work in maintaining and repairing a variety of automotive, construction, and maintenance equipment, and conducts related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor.

This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The job requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication, hearing, and visual acuity are required for interaction, perception, and performing precise tasks.

The worker is exposed to extreme cold and heat, noise, vibration, hazardous atmospheres, oils, and may need to wear a respirator.

Responsibilities
  • Perform maintenance and repair on all types of gas and diesel automotive, construction, and maintenance equipment; repair automotive bodies; paint equipment; ensure safe operation of vehicles and equipment.
  • Operate automotive diagnostic testing equipment to diagnose mechanical problems, determine required repair or replacement of parts, and initiate repairs.
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections; service and repair equipment as necessary.
  • Diagnose, adjust, repair and service medium and heavy-duty equipment including solid waste collection trucks.
  • Reface valves and seats; grind, assemble and adjust them.
  • Install rings and bearings and effect proper adjustment.
  • Overhaul and repair carburetors and clutches.
  • Perform repairs and replacements on diesel-driven equipment.
  • Repair and overhaul brakes, ignition and fuel systems, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies.
  • Overhaul, tune and adjust engines using specialized and standard test equipment.
  • Perform diversified electrical and electronic work on automotive equipment, troubleshoot problems, and repair or replace defective parts; repair and adjust lights, generators, starters, air conditioning systems, etc.
  • Transport vehicles to and from outside servicers; make road service calls.
  • Perform body repair and paint work.
  • Inspect vehicles, including school buses, for compliance with State safety standards.
  • Maintain tool shop and work area in clean and orderly state.
  • Perform related tasks as required.
Qualifications
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and extensive experience in repairing diesel and gasoline automotive equipment.
  • Possession of a NC CDL Class B License.
  • Possession of North Carolina State Inspection license and refrigerant recovery and recycling certificate.

Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment—including electronic diagnostic equipment—used in the repair of cars, trucks, construction, and maintenance equipment; thorough knowledge and skill in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery such as drills, presses, grinders, micrometers, brake relining and drum grinding machines; ability to diagnose defects in drive trains, chassis, and other components of automotive equipment;

ability to detect by inspection worn or broken automotive parts; ability to keep records of repairs and service operations and to make reports; ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems; ability to interpret and work from sketches, diagrams, and installation and repair charts; ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
