Electrician II – Raleigh, NC
NC State University Facilities Division manages more than 16.7 million square feet of built space and oversees 4,733 acres of campus infrastructure. The Building Maintenance & Operations team is responsible for maintaining a safe, reliable, and high‑performing campus environment.
Job Title: Electrician II
Location: Raleigh, NC
Salary Range: $50,000 – $55,000
Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
- Install, maintain, and repair secondary electrical systems (550V and below) and related equipment.
- Maintain and troubleshoot electrical components such as conduit, wiring, electrical panels, breakers, switch gear, magnetic starters, disconnects, and motors.
- Repair and maintain lighting systems, including fixtures, ballasts, switches, and receptacles.
- Diagnose, service, and repair equipment used in steam generation and distribution, requiring strong mechanical and pipe fitting skills.
- Maintain critical systems such as boilers, turbines, pumps, condensate receivers, steam lines, expansion joints, strainers, pressure‑reducing stations, piping, insulation, air compressors, and water softeners.
- Perform preventive maintenance on refrigeration and air conditioning equipment per manufacturer guidelines.
- Identify and correct faults in control systems; repair, adjust, or replace temperature controls, humidity controllers, sensors, pneumatic control valves, and regulators.
- Lift, carry, and maneuver materials weighing 60‑90 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Stand for extended periods, work in confined spaces, and utilize various tools. Safely climb and work from ladders to access elevated or below‑grade areas. Operate in environments where insects or small animals may be present.
- Communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public, and understand verbal and written instructions regarding work assignments.
- Participate in quarterly on‑call program, carrying a pager for one week at a time, occurring every ten to fourteen weeks.
- Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s). Optional guidelines: experience in the related trade(s) may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis.
Preferred Qualifications- Depth of knowledge and skills for electrical installation, maintenance, alteration, and repair of secondary electrical systems (voltage 550V and below) and equipment.
- Experience in the trades areas of electrical, HVAC, and plumbing.
- Advanced knowledge of electrical theory and application, including troubleshooting complex electrical systems, interpreting schematics, and understanding load calculations and safety codes.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair boilers, fan turbines, pumps, condensate receivers, steam lines, expansion joints, strainers, pressure‑reducing stations, piping insulation, air compressors, water softeners, and other equipment for generating or controlling steam, requiring pipe fitting and other skills.
- Strong problem‑solving and critical‑thinking abilities, with the capacity to independently assess issues, recommend solutions, and complete work efficiently with minimal supervision.
- Valid driver’s license required. A valid North Carolina driver’s license must be maintained within 60 days of hire.
