Job Summary
Responsible for gaining a working knowledge of and performing fire protection inspections and 24‑hour service under direct supervision of an Inspection/Service Technician.
EssentialJob Duties
- Assist Inspectors while they inspect, test, and maintain fire protection systems in accordance with NFPA codes.
- Develop knowledge of life safety and NFPA codes and standards.
- Develop knowledge of fire sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, fire suppression systems and their devices, appurtenances, critical components and operations.
- Perform testing and maintenance under direct supervision of an Inspection/Service Technician.
- Complete on‑job training documentation each week.
- Differentiate between inspection deficiencies and service required to correct found deficiencies.
- Understand and follow SFS’s Safety program, SDS book, Hazardous communication program, policies and procedures. Participate in weekly toolbox talks. Inspectors must know where all related safety documentation is at all times on each project.
- Attend Inspector training sessions at SFS to stay abreast of changing technology, installation, testing and reporting approaches. Classes are scheduled per region, per quarter for a two‑year period.
- Begin NICET exam cycle application within the third evolution of training, NICET exam preparation within the fourth evolution of training, and begin to test for NICET during session five or approximately within one year of hire date or enrollment into Inspector training classes.
- Pass NICET Level II certification in Inspection Testing & Maintenance of Water‑Based Fire Protection Systems prior to achieving “Inspector” status.
- Other duties may be assigned.
- HS Diploma or equivalent required.
- 0–2 years’ experience inspecting fire protection systems preferred.
- Must be able to work alone and as part of a team.
- Basic math skills, mechanical aptitude, problem‑solving skills, customer service skills, decision‑making skills, multitasking ability, ability to meet project schedules, plan and organize, troubleshoot skills, and the ability to train others required.
- Must have the ability to read, write and communicate in English effectively with employees and customers.
- Ability to operate a computer and tablet, required.
- Experience with Salesforce and ERP systems preferred.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record required.
- Must comply with SFS’s Drug and Alcohol policy and background screening requirements, which may also include customer‑specific requirements based on contractual agreement.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to bend, ascend and descend step stools, ladders and stairs, kneel, lift 50 lbs, sitting, stooping, twisting and working at heights may also be required.
Work EnvironmentFrequent local travel and occasional regional and non‑regional travel is required. Employees will frequently work inside and outside in hot/cold temperatures and be exposed to loud noises, cramped quarters, dust, fumes and odors, standing on hard surfaces, and electrical hazards. Employees may occasionally be exposed to chemicals, moving machinery, uneven and slippery surfaces. Personal protective equipment must be worn as required by company safety policies.
