Position Description

Ryder is hiring a Diesel Technician Trainee in Raleigh, NC. The role includes weekly pay, training to become a Ryder Diesel Mechanic Technician, and the opportunity for career advancement.

Pay and schedule:

  • Hourly Pay: $22.48 per hour
  • Schedule:

    Monday – Friday, First Shift 6:00 am – 2:30 pm

Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalency (GED)
  • Up to one year of experience; no mechanical experience required
  • Up to one year of mechanical experience working with diesel engines (preferred)
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Proficiency in English written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated customer service skills
  • Strong technical aptitude; ability to learn and maintain equipment and machinery (preferred)
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve problems quickly (preferred)
  • Work independently and as part of a team
  • Represent Ryder professionally, engaging both employees and customers
  • Time‑management and priority‑setting skills
  • Track record of performance and good attendance
  • Personal accountability and proven results achievement
  • Basic computer skills, Microsoft Office beginner level
  • Basic knowledge of machines and tools, repair, and maintenance (preferred)
  • Basic knowledge of shop management systems (preferred)
  • Valid Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A, holder of a driver’s license for 180 days
  • DOT Safety Regulated Position – Regulated Tech
  • Safety Sensitive Position – meets state law age and work‑hour requirements
  • Must obtain CDL within six months after hire
  • Pass a Ryder drug test, DOT physical, road test, and background/MOT check with previous employment verification for the last three years
Responsibilities
  • Move heavy duty vehicles to/from yard, wash bay, service shop, or rental shop; wash and detail vehicles manually or using automated equipment
  • Fuel diesel, natural gas, and hybrid vehicles properly while adhering to shop safety policies and procedures; record fuel activity and maintain fuel & DEF inventories and reconciliation using handheld devices
  • Perform multi‑point inspections on inbound units, checking tire pressure, fluid levels, lights, washing windows, changing tires, inspecting refrigeration units, and reporting issues to the shop
  • Maintain fuel island area to Six Sigma standards and policies; perform some facility maintenance and minor tasks as assigned
  • Attend and complete all Technician Training Development Program requirements and assessments, including hands‑on and online training and tasks learned
    • Service island training: multi‑point inspection, vehicle fueling and washing, environmental safety and spill response, safe driving, and 6S organization
    • Technician I training: preventive maintenance, tire & wheel service, and tool management
    • Technician II training: high‑definition electrical, air and hydraulic brakes
  • Be placed in the applicable training module/step based on current skills
  • Perform other duties as assigned
