Position Summary
The intern will work closely alongside the research technician to develop skills necessary for future work in farm management including equipment maintenance, general field operations (planting, harvesting, cultivation, irrigation) and fence maintenance. They will also help with long‑term improvement projects related to irrigation, weed identification, crop management plans, and assist in the design, build, and trialing of custom mechanical cultivators for the Fike Agronomy Field Lab.
Key Responsibilities- Plant and harvest commodity crops
- Maintain and install fencing
- Plan crop production
- Manage soil sensor and flume systems
- Assess soil health
- Operate and maintain tractors safely
- Implement integrated pest management
- Maintain and install irrigation systems
Minimum:
High school diploma or equivalent and at least 6 months of farm experience.
Required Skills:
- Clear communication and ability to work with varied individuals
- Strong interest in sustainable agriculture and enthusiasm to learn
- Ability to work independently when needed
- Capacity to lift at least 45 pounds
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions (cold, heat, humidity, rain, pollen)
- Awareness of exposure to biting insects, snakes, and poison ivy
Licensing &
Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license (NC driver’s license required)
- Commercial driver’s license not required
- Health insurance for temporary employees

5–10 hours per week, Monday–Friday.
