Role OverviewIn this field-based role, you will diagnose, service, and repair electronic fire alarm systems and related building system products at customer sites. You will work closely with customers and internal teams to resolve service issues quickly, deliver dependable solutions, and help keep critical facilities running safely and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities- Receive service calls from the Service Resource Center and review the brief description of each equipment or system malfunction.
- Contact customer representatives to confirm the issue and gather the details needed to begin troubleshooting.
- Diagnose problems and perform service and repairs on electronic fire alarm systems and related building system products at customer sites.
- Follow prescribed troubleshooting procedures and use technical manuals, part manuals, change notices, bulletins, and modification notices to repair equipment.
- Service, troubleshoot, and install Fire & Life Safety systems from multiple manufacturers, including Simplex Grinnell.
- Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, submittals, specifications, software/systems, programs, schematics, and operational product manuals.
- Communicate clearly with district staff and customers to support a high level of service and customer satisfaction.
- Complete Service Acknowledgements with proper coding using smart phones and laptop computers, and obtain customer signature upon completion of each service call.
- Participate in a scheduled on-call rotation and support customers when after-hours service is needed.
- Help train or mentor other members of the service team when needed.
- Provide recommendations and solutions that help improve facility efficiency and address service-related concerns.
- Support upselling opportunities and provide quotes that align with customer needs and service findings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Own each call with accountability, safety, and integrity, from the first diagnosis through final service acknowledgement and customer sign-off. Stay close to the work by asking the right questions, using the available technical resources effectively, and removing obstacles that prevent fast customer support. Troubleshoot installed systems with discipline, including panel repair and reprogramming, device replacement or repair, low voltage circuit troubleshooting, and system testing.
Use clear communication and practical problem-solving to turn service findings into recommendations, quotes, and reliable outcomes. Work as one team with district staff, customers, and fellow technicians, sharing knowledge and supporting mentoring where needed. Continuously improve by documenting work accurately, learning from each call, and applying candid, solution-focused thinking to recurring issues. When integrated systems are involved, apply programming experience across fire alarm, security, and access control panels, and use knowledge of CCTV and IT and IP networks when helpful.
- 2+ years of documented experience in low voltage electrical systems, including Fire/Life Safety systems, Access Control, Nurse Call, and Paging systems.
- Experience reading and interpreting blueprints, submittals, and operational/product manuals.
- Knowledge of test equipment, multi-meter, digital analyzer, and commissioning devices.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to perform physical labor, including carrying and moving equipment and tools up to 50-70 lbs.
- Ability to work in unusual and sometimes difficult positions, such as climbing ladders, scaffolding, and high lift equipment up to 40 feet, and working within ducts, crawl spaces, and above ceilings.
