Raleigh, NC area

ABOUT

THE ROLE

Brooksource's Fortune 500 Energy & Utilities client is seeking a skilled Telecom Technician to join their team. In this role, you will be responsible for the installation, programming, testing, and maintenance of a wide range of telecommunications equipment and systems, including fiber optics, microwave (SONET, DWDM, DS0 up to OC-192), telephone systems and associated infrastructure (PBXs, subscriber sets, wiring, network interfaces), wireless systems (two-way radio, paging, SCADA, siren control), data networks, antenna networks (towers, feedlines, combiners, duplexers), power equipment (emergency generators, batteries, inverters, UPS, transfer panels), and grounding systems.

The position requires working in diverse environments such as power plants, office buildings, and remote sites, often outdoors in all weather conditions. This is a hands-on role that involves physical activity, extensive travel, and a flexible schedule including overtime, weekends, second shift, and call-out duties.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Install, program, test, and maintain telecommunications equipment and systems, including fiber optics, microwave (SONET, DWDM, DS0 up to OC-192), telephone systems, wireless systems, data networks, and associated physical infrastructure.
  • Perform troubleshooting and repairs on telecommunications infrastructure and equipment such as PBXs, subscriber sets, wiring, network interfaces, antenna networks (towers, feedlines, combiners, duplexers), power equipment (emergency generators, batteries, inverters, UPS, transfer panels), and grounding systems.
  • Utilize specialized test equipment including OTDR, spectrum analyzers, RF service monitors, optical power and source meters, battery load banks, battery measurement tools, and DS1/DS3 test sets.
  • Conduct fiber splicing using both mechanical and fusion splicing equipment.
  • Work in a variety of environments, including power plants, office buildings, and remote sites, and perform outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders and steps, and adhere to all safety protocols.
  • Travel extensively, primarily in a company vehicle, with occasional commercial flights; regular overtime and weekend work required.
  • Participate in second shift and call-out duties as needed.
  • Maintain required certifications, such as a DOT driver's health card.
  • Collaborate with team members, communicate effectively with stakeholders, and work both independently and as part of a team.
WHAT YOU BRING
  • Associate's Degree in Electronics or equivalent required.
  • Two or more years of previous work experience in telecommunications or a related field.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs, climb ladders, and work in various facilities and outdoor environments.
  • Willingness to work overtime, weekends, second shift, and participate in call-out duties.
  • Ability to travel extensively, including occasional commercial flights.
  • Eligible to obtain a DOT driver's health card.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; team player and self-motivated with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Experience with installation, programming, testing, and maintenance of telecommunications equipment and systems (Fiber Optics, Microwave, Telephone Systems, Wireless Systems, Data Networks, Antenna Networks, Power Equipment, Grounding systems).
  • Proven troubleshooting skills and proficiency with specialized test equipment (e.g., OTDR, Spectrum Analyzer, RF Service Monitor, Optical Power and Source Meters, Battery Load Bank, Battery Measurement, DS1/DS3 Test Sets).
  • Experience with fiber splicing (mechanical and fusion) preferred.
  • 10 or more years of experience in telecom installation/maintenance (desired)
