Description of Work The North Carolina Department of Administration is seeking applicants for a Maintenance/Construction Technician Ill position for our Facility Management Division. The Facility Management Division provides preventive, routine and emergency maintenance and repair services to the State Government complex and some facilities used by government workers in outlying areas. This position requires a thorough working knowledge of fuel oil and gas boilers.

Duties include maintenance and repair of boilers and boiler room auxiliary equipment such as condensate systems, reducing stations, pumps, steam and water valves, air compressors, steam traps, and domestic hot water heat exchangers. Position will ensure that all controls, feed water draft, etc., are maintained for optimum plant operation. Position will perform maintenance and make repairs to the underground steam distribution system and reduced pressure steam systems throughout the complex.

Recruitment Range: $41,206-$52,199

Working knowledge of the principles and techniques involved in mechanical maintenance.

Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in mechanical maintenance.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to perform work independently or as part of a team.

Physical strength sufficient to perform heavy physical tasks on a periodic basis.

The preferred applicant will have previous experience working with Boilers and reducing stations and will have experience in the maintenance and repair of steam distribution systems.

MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:

Division prefers applicants with progressive experience in industrial/commercial steam systems and heating plants.

Preferred applicant will have experience in the maintenance and repair of pumps, steam and water valves as well as steam traps and blowers.

Preferred applicant will have current confined space and asbestos safety training.

Individual hired must be familiar with building, life and safety codes; capable of strenuous lifting, crawling and working at heights up to sixty-five feet or more as well as working in confined spaces such as steam tunnels and manholes.

Medical certification is required to verify the individual's ability to wear and use a respirator. This is a condition of employment. Employee is required to wear a uniform, use safety equipment and follow safety regulations which are provided by the State. Candidate must present proof of a valid NC Driver's License and proof of an acceptable driving record.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
