Family Peer Support Specialist (FPSS)

Monday-Friday 8:30 am–5 pm

Pay Range (Minimum): $17.00 per hour

Overview

As a Family Peer Support Specialist, you partner with youth and families, providing one‑on‑one, person‑centered support to caregivers of children and young adults (up to age 21) who have or are at risk for mental health, substance use, or intellectual/developmental disabilities. You teach families strategies to overcome challenges, create stable home environments, and navigate community resources.

Responsibilities
  • Develop person‑and‑family centered relationships with children and families using positive approaches to promote health and wellness.
  • Share lessons learned from personal experience as a caregiver of a child or adolescent with social/emotional or behavioral challenges.
  • Engage parents/caregivers to emphasize the importance of creating safe and secure home environments.
  • Assist families in identifying precursors and antecedents to past crises and work collaboratively with chosen supports to prevent future crises.
  • Support parents/caregivers, youth and other family members in making informed choices regarding care, services, and life decisions.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary treatment team to develop person‑family centered treatment plans and crisis plans.
  • Convey observations and key issues to supervisors and other treatment team members while respecting confidentiality regulations.
  • Build connections and social supports within the community, engaging schools, health care providers, family and youth organizations to improve family health.
  • Participate in meetings and conferences to share experiences and educate stakeholders on advocacy strategies.
  • Attend and actively participate in training and meetings as required.
  • Maintain current licensure and certification, and comply with agency policies, state and federal statutes, and regulations related to program areas.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of emergency procedures and assist in crisis situations.
  • Complete other responsibilities assigned by the supervisor.
  • Use driving and travel as required.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (Required).
  • Certified Family Peer Specialist – National Federation of Families (Preferred, must obtain within 12 months of hire).
  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License.
  • Lived experience as a caregiver of a child or youth with behavioral health challenges (Required).
  • Completion of Family Peer Support training (Required).
  • Knowledge of behavioral health systems, community resources, and family advocacy.
  • Strong communication, engagement, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in community settings.
  • Preferred:
    Trauma‑Informed Care, Motivational Interviewing, WRAP, System of Care Principles, Family Journey Assessment.
