About the Department

The Violence Prevention & Threat Management Program is responsible for educating the campus community on how to recognize and refer concerning behaviors involving students, employees, or non‑affiliates. Referrals are reviewed and appropriate follow‑up actions are taken to support both the individual involved and the broader community. The office leads the University Behavior Assessment Team, which coordinates timely, effective interventions for situations that may pose a risk to campus safety.

The program’s primary goal is to collaborate with campus and community partners to proactively prevent violence and maintain a safe and supportive learning environment.

Position Overview

Join a dynamic and growing Violence Prevention & Threat Management team as an Assistant Director/Case Manager. In this role, you will support the Director of Risk Assessment and play a key part in advancing the university’s behavioral threat assessment, case management, and prevention efforts. This full‑time, 12‑month position collaborates closely with campus partners, including Academic and Student Affairs and Human Resources, to support a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to threat assessment and intervention.

Key Responsibilities

As the Case Manager, you will lead and support behavioral threat assessments using structured professional judgment—conducting intake, gathering and analyzing information, assessing risk, and documenting cases. You will coordinate case reviews, develop and implement individualized management strategies, and work with stakeholders to monitor and reduce risk. Your attention to detail will ensure accurate records, timely follow‑up, and compliance with institutional policies and applicable laws.

Additional duties include:

  • Consulting and Advising (Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management) – 30% – Identify and address potential risks to campus safety, conduct assessments, develop individualized management strategies, coordinate multidisciplinary interventions, and connect individuals to appropriate campus and community resources.
  • Professional Knowledge and Case Management Practice – 30% – Gather and synthesize behavioral and contextual information, monitor risk over time, maintain clear, objective documentation, and adjust strategies as needed.
  • Communication and Multidisciplinary Collaboration – 20% – Contribute to case reviews and planning efforts within the Behavioral Assessment Team (BAT) and NC State Cares Team; work closely with partners across campus and external agencies to ensure responses are thoughtful, legally sound, and focused on safety.
  • Outreach and Prevention – 20% – Support the development and delivery of training and outreach initiatives that empower the campus community to recognize and report concerning behaviors early, contributing to broader institutional efforts to prevent violence.

Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum education:

post‑baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience; advanced degree on an exceptional basis.
