The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community.

Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission.

Description of Work

The SHIELD Case Manager serves as a dedicated resource navigator and case management specialist for employees of the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction (NCDAC). The primary purpose of this position will be to identify employee needs, coordinate appropriate support, and connect staff with internal and community-based resources that support and promote both personal and professional well-being. This position will provide resource navigation and coordination for a broad range of employee needs and will work collaboratively with S.H.I.E.L.D. clinical and peer support staff, agency partners, and external service providers to identify appropriate services and referral options.

The S.H.I.E.L.D. Case Manager will report to the Senior Critical Incident and Peer Support Manager and may be called upon to serve in a peer support capacity when appropriate.

The S.H.I.E.L.D. case manager will be responsible for developing community partnerships and relationships that strengthen and expand available resources and referral pathways to external providers to ensure employees have timely access to the services and resources they need.

About SHIELD

The S.H.I.E.L.D. section exists to improve the overall health and performance of the correctional workforce by providing confidential, non-emergent support services to DAC staff. These include a combination of behavioral health and peer support initiatives focused on wellness to enhance professional and personal success.

Salary Range

$52,592 - $92,036

Applicant Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of experience in the program related to the area of assignment; or An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience providing individualized case management and resource navigation.
  • Experience coordinating referrals and access to external psychiatric, mental health, substance use, and other specialized services.
  • Knowledge of current community resources, social service systems, referral options, and emerging employee needs through ongoing professional development.
