Position: Intern - Hardware / Embedded Security Engineer

Internship Overview

Join us as a Hardware Security & embedded systems intern s part‑time internship (20 hrs/week for ~3 months) focuses on hands‑on lab work analyzing embedded devices, firmware, and hardware security for utilities and energy solutions.

Responsibilities
  • Work hands‑on with embedded devices in a lab setting to support security outcomes for products used in Utilities & Energy environments.
  • Interact with microcontroller‑based systems via JTAG, SWD, UART, and analyze communication interfaces (SPI, I2C, UART) to understand system behavior and security aspects.
  • Assist with firmware workflows: extraction, flashing, low‑level debugging for agile iteration.
  • Support hardware‑assisted testing and validation activities, documenting steps and outcomes.
  • Contribute to firmware analysis and security assessment, including basic static and dynamic analysis.
  • Participate in hardware security testing (device interfaces, physical attack surfaces) following responsible testing standards.
  • Support validation of secure boot and hardware root of trust concepts.
  • Assist with threat modeling activities, capture risks, assumptions, and recommended mitigations.
  • Document findings and remediation recommendations in clear, actionable format.
Required Skills & Experience
  • Currently enrolled in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related program with an embedded/hardware focus.
  • Foundational understanding of microcontrollers and embedded system concepts.
  • Familiarity with C/C++ programming and basic software engineering practices.
  • Interest in firmware, hardware interaction, and low‑level system behavior.
  • Comfort working with lab equipment and safe lab practices.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and collaboration skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication.
Preferred Skills & Experience
  • Experience with debugging interfaces such as JTAG, SWD, UART.
  • Experience with embedded development or firmware projects.
  • Familiarity with firmware analysis concepts and/or secure coding practices.
  • Experience using logic analyzers and oscilloscopes.
  • Basic understanding of cybersecurity principles related to embedded devices.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across disciplines and contribute process improvement ideas.
Travel & Physical Demands

Travel: 0–10% of time. This is a typical office job with no special physical requirements; the role is safety sensitive.
