About the Position
NC State Wellness and Recreation is seeking energetic and responsible individuals to prevent emergencies and provide swift, effective responses when needed, creating a safe and enjoyable environment for our community.
This is a temporary, seasonal, part-time position starting April 29, 2026 and ending August 16, 2026
. This position reports to the Assistant Director, Aquatics.
- Safety and Surveillance:
Ensure the safety of users through continuous surveillance. - Facility Inspection & Maintenance:
Inspect the facility, perform preventative maintenance and report any unsafe conditions or equipment failures. - Chemical Testing:
Perform regular water chemistry tests and accurately log the readings to maintain water quality and compliance. - Event Operations:
Assist with the setup and teardown of equipment for various aquatic programs, special events and open recreation activities. - Certification and Fitness:
Maintain an up-to-date American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification and preserve the required fitness level (swimming skills, strength and endurance) necessary to effectively respond to all aquatic emergencies. - Cleanliness:
Maintain a clean and inviting aquatic environment. - Guideline Enforcement:
Understand and enforce Wellness and Recreation and area specific guidelines. - Risk Management:
Knowledge and implementation of emergency action plan. - Administrative Support:
Complete necessary records and reports, and assist with opening and closing checklists. - Training and Meetings:
Attend required training and meetings. - Community:
Develop professional relationships with co-workers, participants and guests. - Support:
Perform other related duties to support the overall functioning of the department.
- High school diploma/equivalency or combination of education and experience.
- Initiative:
Complete required work, pursue opportunities to expand knowledge, work to better the department. - Communication:

Present expected behavior in the workplace, exemplified by your attitude and effort. - Current Lifeguarding and First Aid
Certifications:
Possess valid American Red Cross Lifeguarding and First Aid certifications. - Demonstrated Lifeguard Prerequisite Proficiency:
Exhibit mastery of all American Red Cross Lifeguard prerequisite skills, including:- Continuous swimming of 300 yards.
- Treading water for 2 minutes.
- Successful completion of a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds.
- Professional and Collaborative Teamwork:
Interact professionally and respectfully with patrons, fellow lifeguards, and other staff members. - Proven Lifeguarding
Experience:
Possess prior experience as a lifeguard, demonstrating the practical application of lifeguarding skills and emergency response protocols.
A minimum of one (1) year of proven lifeguarding experience in an established aquatics facility is required.
Required Certifications- Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification
- Current First Aid certification
Annualized rate: $15.00/hour
