Overview

A Climbing Wall Specialist is an enthusiastic and safety-focused member of the Wellness and Recreation team, committed to providing a safe and educational climbing experience to the campus community. In this role, you will instruct climbing basics skills and techniques, educate participants on technical skills and risk management, provide a high level of customer service and ensure a welcoming environment for all.

Responsibilities
  • Provide high-quality instruction in climbing fundamentals, including knot tying, belaying (top-rope and lead), proper use of equipment, and climbing technique.
  • Facilitate and teach proper belay and climbing techniques while educating participants on equipment, technical skills and risk management.
  • Observe and check for proper belay techniques and safe climbing practices, ensuring adherence to all safety rules and operational guidelines.
  • Manage participant behavior and mediate conflicts to ensure a positive experience for everyone.
  • Utilize Inno Soft Fusion to accurately check in climbers upon arrival and verify membership status.
  • Manage the check-out and inventory of rental equipment, specifically including harnesses, shoes, and chalk, using the Inno Soft Fusion system.
  • Assist with program registration and equipment check-out. Help with program design, implementation and evaluation.
  • Maintain a clean and inviting climbing center environment.
  • Attend non-revenue generating sporting events for free.
Other Work/Responsibilities
  • Understand and enforce Wellness and Recreation and area specific guidelines.
  • Knowledge and implementation of emergency action plan.
  • Attend required training and meetings.
  • Develop professional relationships with co-workers, participants and guests.
  • Perform other related duties to support the overall functioning of the department.
Working Conditions
  • Both indoors and outdoors with potential exposure to adverse weather.
  • Requires frequent standing, sitting, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting weight up to 40 lbs regularly. Must be comfortable and capable of working at height (over 30 feet) for route-setting, maintenance, and rescue procedures.
  • The work environment can be potentially loud and busy, requiring strong communication, listening, and observation skills to ensure patron safety.
  • Flexibility in availability is needed to cover operational hours, which potentially include early mornings, late nights, weekends, and university breaks (e.g., fall break, spring break).
  • Exposure to potential safety hazards inherent to climbing operations. Strict adherence to the emergency action plan is required to mitigate risk.

Required License or Certification
  • Current full-time NC State student, demonstrated by enrollment in at least 12 undergraduate or 9 graduate credit hours.
  • First Aid and Adult CPR / AED certifications should be current or obtained before position commencement.
  • This position requires you to work a minimum of one four-hour shift per week.
Work Schedule

Maximum 20 hours per week as scheduled.
