Overview

Essential job duties are those of a University Bus Driver responsible for safely transporting students, faculty, staff, and school affiliates to and from designated locations. Buses range from 22 to 44 passengers. Trips may be field trips, labs, sporting events, or other extracurricular activities. Work hours may include early mornings, late evenings, or weekends to accommodate schedules. The Bus Driver maintains the cleanliness, organization, and safety of the bus.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Picks up and returns passengers at locations specified by reservation
  • Ensures that all passengers are safely and properly seated on the bus
  • Observes rules of the road and drives with caution
  • Ensures timely conveyance of passengers to their destination
  • Ensures that vehicles are kept neat and clean at all times
  • Carries out routine pre-trip and post-trip inspection of vehicles; checks tire pressure, oil levels, windshield wipers, mirrors and other details for any problems; identifies electrical or mechanical faults. May carry out simple maintenance and reports needs to the Bus Dispatcher
  • Fills bus fuel tank
  • Reads maps and checks weather and traffic reports to determine the best route
  • Keeps documents and receipts of the vehicle and maintenance services secure
  • Maintains a travel log of travel locations, times, hours worked, and mileage for billing purposes
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • CDL A/B with passenger endorsement (no restrictions) or equivalent; well-trained and skilled driver
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and the rules of the road; adheres strictly to them
  • Ability to load/unload luggage and operate doors; requires strength and stamina
  • Patient and calm in dealing with passengers and traffic; able to act quickly in a crisis
  • Ability to drive for long periods and maintain a strong sense of direction
  • Focus, confidence, observance, quick response time
  • Effective communication, leadership, teamwork, and ability to follow instructions
Licenses, Certifications & Requirements
  • Must have a valid North Carolina CDL, Class A/B with passenger endorsement, no restrictions, and air brakes
