The Vactor Truck Operator is responsible for performing such tasks necessary for the operation of the Vactor truck and the routine maintenance of the storm drain system. This individual will assist the working supervisor in other related duties.

The Vactor Truck Operator performs fieldwork on the storm drain system and generally in the right-of-way on streets and roads. Work involves driving the Vactor truck, lifting sections of manhole covers, contact with hazardous materials, close proximity to heavy equipment, and confined space entry.

• Operate and preventive maintenance on Vactor truck and other related equipment;
• Clean (rod and vacuum) storm drain lines, manholes, and catch basins;
• Positions and operates vacuum boom to remove debris;
• Identify needed repairs to sanitary sewer lines, manholes and catch basins;
• Assists in flow monitoring, dye tests, and smoke tests;
• Reports to the working supervisor any problem with the equipment and/or facilities that need attention;
• Has daily contact with the public;
• May work on holidays as required by immediate supervisor/director; and
• Performs other work as assigned.

• Maintain regular and prompt attendance; physically present to work
• Performs after work hours as required, (nights and weekends)
• May perform work on weekends; standby is required

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Minimum one (1) year of experience operating heavy equipment, preferably as a Vactor Truck Operator or related field.

• Valid Texas Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class B required.
• Must maintain an acceptable driving record.
• May be required to obtain additional certifications depending on job assignment.

• Communicate effectively in writing as appropriate for documentation purposes.
• Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
• Considerable skills in the operation and maintenance of the Vactor truck.
• Ability to detect malfunctions in storm drains.
• Ability to read and interpret work orders, safety guidelines, and equipment manuals.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to perform heavy physical labor under varying weather conditions.

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. Significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing and pulling. Work outdoors in different climates.

Ability to lift up to 100 lbs. Must be able to be on call for 24 hours while on stand-by duty. Must be able to work weekends, holidays or special events when necessary. The work may occasionally require entry and exit from confined spaces.
