Position: Full time sign language interpreter

Starting Date: Aug 1, 2026

Position Purpose

Under the general supervision of the building principal, facilitate communication between students with hearing impairments and their hearing peers, classroom teachers, and other personnel in the school system. Interpreting responsibilities may include tutoring, note taking, and participation in meetings as a member of the educational team.

Essential Functions
  • Provide sign to voice and voice to sign interpreting, which may include Signed Exact English, American Sign Language, or other forms of manual communication based on the needs of the student.
  • Participate in educational team meetings (e.g., IEP and MDT meetings) to provide input on the success of communication strategies with the student.
  • Consult with classroom teachers and other staff members on a regular basis.
  • Provide general classroom support and outside supervision of students on an as‑needed basis when appropriate.
  • Work with audiologists, deaf educators, and/or special educators to monitor the use and implementation of audio support systems intended to improve the student’s ability to receive auditory input.
  • Interpret for extracurricular activities and other meetings outside of the school day, as required.
  • Assist with classroom adaptations as determined by the IEP, instructional team, or in consultation with special education personnel, when appropriate.
  • Provide other educational support services, such as tutoring and/or note taking, when interpreting is not needed.
  • Maintain appropriate certification on the EIPA or other skills evaluation system as designated by the Nebraska Department of Education, Rule 51.
  • Engage in ongoing continuing education/professional development as designated by the Nebraska Department of Education, Rule 51.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable attendance history while employed by the district.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.
Equipment
  • Use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copier, fax machine, and telephone.
Travel Requirements
  • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of Signed Exact English, American Sign Language, and/or other sign language systems.
  • Knowledge of the use and care of audio support systems.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques used in communicating with Deaf and hard of hearing students.
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture and the barriers faced by Deaf/hard of hearing students.
  • Ability to hear spoken language communication.
  • Ability to interpret spoken English at a rate appropriate for expected job performance.
  • Ability to voice for Deaf and hard of hearing students.
  • Ability to understand and use proper English, including vocabulary and grammar.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self‑evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate adult‑student relationships with all students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
  • Work in a standard school building environment.
  • Regularly required to use hands/fine finger dexterity to communicate with Deaf and/or hard of hearing students.
Qualification Profile
  • Certification:
    • Valid Nebraska driver’s license or ability to provide own transportation for district‑related events.
    • Competency in manual communication as defined by the Nebraska Department of Education, Rule 51.
  • Education:
    • Post‑secondary training in manual communication (required).
    • Bachelor’s degree in Deaf education and/or manual communication (preferred).
  • Experience: Successful prior experience working with Deaf or Hard of Hearing children (preferred).
