Job Description

Butcher Power Products (BPP) designs and manufactures mission‑critical and industrial power solutions for essential infrastructure nationwide. Headquartered in Sacramento, CA, our teams collaborate closely across engineering, manufacturing, and operations to build reliable, high‑quality systems and take pride in delivering work that truly matters.
Job Summary: The Sr. Electrical Engineer (R&D) is responsible for collaborating on or leading the electrical design, testing, and certification of new low and medium voltage power distribution products. This role works closely with cross-functional teams to ensure product safety, reliability, manufacturability, and compliance with the relevant industry standards, and it builds the design criteria, calculators, and reusable models that make each product line repeatable rather than one-off.

The ideal candidate brings strong engineering fundamentals, technical leadership, and the ability to carry complex projects from concept through production under limited direction.
Key Responsibilities:
• Lead the electrical design for power and control on new product development projects, from project initiation through production implementation.
• Execute and implement the New Product Introduction (NPI) electrical engineering work for assigned projects.
• Write detailed electrical engineering specifications and lead the creation of electrical schematics, wiring drawings, and bills of material for prototype equipment and test units, in collaboration with commercial, mechanical, and CAD stakeholders.
• Work with Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs) to define product evaluation and certification scope and the qualification path for each product configuration.
• Develop and document test plans according to the relevant standards. Common tests include full-load temperature rise, dielectric and BIL, and short-circuit and withstand current tests.
• Support the testing process at in-house and third-party laboratories. Evaluate test results and revise designs based on empirical data and established engineering concepts.
• Characterize the electrical and thermal performance of common design elements through testing, simulation, and analytical methods. Develop standard design criteria, design calculators, and reusable design models.
• Develop modular, configurable designs and option matrices that support standardized quoting and CPQ.
• Work closely with manufacturing engineering to implement Design for Manufacturability (DFM) concepts throughout the new product development process.
• Work with mechanical and electrical designers to integrate electrical design into equipment layouts and general arrangement drawings.
• Conduct failure analysis of existing products and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
• Engineer and design switchboard and switch gear to customer specifications, including selection of electrical components (e.g., circuit breakers, relays, transformers) against performance criteria, applicable standards, and project requirements.
• Serve as the primary technical point of contact for the equipment design through manufacturing and testing, including Factory Witness Test (FWT) troubleshooting, and as a technical resource to Sales and Project Management on proposals and customer meetings.
• Mentor and support the professional development of junior engineers through design reviews and knowledge sharing.
• Serve as a senior technical resource on production design work as assigned. Assignments may span new product development and production engineering as business needs require.
• Must comply with the company’s safety policies.
Qualifications:
• BSEE or equivalent in experience. Master’s degree preferred.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in the electrical design of low and/or medium voltage power distribution equipment or related products.
• Experience with NRTL (UL, Intertek/ETL, CSA, etc.) evaluation, testing, and certification processes.
• Experience with common standards for electrical equipment (UL 891, 1558, 508A). Familiarity with IEEE/ANSI C37.20.2, C37.04, C37.06, C37.09; CSA C22.2; EEMAC G8-3.2…
