Maintenance Crew Leader (Transportation)

Summary:

Performs basic gardening activities required at residential or commercial locations, including mowing lawns, edging, pruning, planting, and basic irrigation repairs. Generally supervises a crew of 2-5 associates.

Responsibilities & Duties Safety Enforce Safety/Security Rules
  • Communicate safety rules to the team, ensure the safety of others, observe safety rules, and report all work area accidents.
  • Ensure safe transportation and appropriate use of equipment & supplies.
  • Inspect equipment and report malfunctioning equipment.
  • Train employees on gas/oil mixture, safety procedures, and VPS performance standards.
  • Transport team safely from property to property and observe all traffic rules.
  • Evaluate employee physical/mental condition.
  • Mix chemical solutions (e.g., pesticides, weed killer, rodenticides, and fertilizers) per instructions.
  • Protect client property and identify on‑site safety hazards.
  • Participate in required training programs (e.g., safety, chemical, equipment).
  • Conduct mechanical vehicle inspections and submit weekly vehicle inspection sheets.
  • Report problems to management (e.g., injury, supplies, equipment, etc.).
Prepare Daily Resources
  • Designate work assignments based on skill levels and prioritize maintenance activities.
  • Motivate team and manage time.
  • Choose appropriate break locations.
  • Organize materials & equipment for daily/weekly use.
  • Maintain clean work vehicles and trailers.
Train Employees
  • Observe new employee equipment skills/knowledge, explain work procedures to new employees, and train employees on equipment and supplies.
  • Build team skills and manage the impact of team changes.
  • Explain work procedures to supervisors and orient supervisors on on‑site processes.
Provide Quality Service
  • Deliver consistent quality by prioritizing property activities and determining the course of action.
  • Document all problems.
  • Conduct monthly quality inspections with the supervisor.
Supervise On‑Site Activities
  • Inspect property before and after service, including turf condition.
  • Collect all tools and equipment after service.
  • Perform basic gardening activities, manage on‑site time, set work pace for the crew, and complete client punch list.
  • Facilitate team consensus and evaluate employee performance.
  • Manage scheduled breaks.
  • Review client punch list with the supervisor, manage client problems.
  • Diagnose technical problems and adjust/repair irrigation systems as needed and know the location of emergency shut‑off connections, i.e., backflow/water meter.
Additional Duties
  • Determine when to alert the supervisor.
  • Separate waste for disposal and remove waste from the site.
  • Complete daily timesheet for self and crew.
Qualifications
  • Must have a working knowledge of the English and Spanish languages.
  • Must have a valid California driver’s license, an insurable driving record, and qualify to drive a company vehicle.
  • CLT Certification preferred.
  • CPR and First Aid certified.
Experience
  • Must have at least one year of experience as a Landscape Gardener.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Irrigation controller programming.
  • Recognizing and addressing component problems.
  • Recognizing and documenting potential hazards.
  • Recognizing drainage deficiencies and problem soil.
  • Able to identify by common botanical name 25 common plants (bedding flowers, ground cover, shrubs/perennials, trees, and palms).
  • Aesthetic and ornamental pruning of plants.
  • Able to identify 10 frequently seen weeds.
  • Able to identify 5 frequently seen pests.
  • Establish relationships with clientele.
  • Organizing, scheduling, and completing work routines.
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with employees and management in a team environment.
  • Able to pass VPS driving test.
  • Must be able to drive a truck while towing a trailer.
