Position Summary

Drive commercial vehicles and operate or tend machinery equipped with tanks, scoops, shovels, or buckets to hydroseed, excavate and load loose materials on construction sites.

Duties and Responsibilities

include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Establishes and/or maintains good working relationships with co‑workers, supervisors, vendors, customers, etc.
  • Documents and logs work/rest periods.
  • Complies with truck driving rules and regulations (size, weight, route designations, parking and break periods) as well as with company policies and procedures.
  • Follows directions and shows initiative.
  • Completes work orders for equipment, labor and material and submits to management for immediate processing.
  • Adheres to all company policies and procedures paying special attention to health and/or safety procedures & regulations.
  • Inspects vehicles before and after every trip, which includes checking the oil, gas, water levels, tires, mechanical items and safety issues and reports all defects to management immediately.
  • Promptly reports any accidents, injuries or mechanical faults to management.
  • Cleans and maintains company vehicles according to company standards.
  • Drives machines to and from work sites.
  • Drives machines in a safe manner on work sites; sometimes with other members riding on top in hydroseed applications.
  • Does labor intensive work when necessary.
  • Moves levers, depresses foot pedals, and turns dials to operate power machinery, such as power shovels, stripping shovels, scraper loaders, or backhoes.
  • Sets up or inspects equipment prior to operation.
  • Becomes familiar with hydroseed & digging plans, machine capabilities and limitations, and with efficient and safe procedures in a given application.
  • Observes hand signals, grade stakes, or other markings when operating machines so that work can be performed to specifications.
  • Operates machinery to perform activities such as hydroseeding, back filling excavations, vibrating or breaking rock or concrete, or creating construction entrances. Receives written or oral instructions.
  • Measures and verifies levels of rock or gravel, bases, or other excavated material.
  • Evaluates information to determine compliance with company and state standards.

Education/Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certificates and Licenses

Valid Class A Driver's License

Language Ability

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, site maps, work orders, and procedure & policy manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Math Ability

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Ability to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Technical Skills

Ability to use online/ mobile time-tracking and work order software.

Supervisory Responsibilities

May need to train and review new operators on occasion.
