Psychiatric Specialist

Unit Summary

Behavioral Health and 4C provide general, acute care for inpatient adults who may be suffering from mental or behavioral health issues. The 4C unit has a capacity of 14 beds, while the BHU census capacity is 23 beds. Patients may be depressed, schizophrenic, or struggle with substance abuse or a mood disorder. In addition to BHU and 4C, staff works in a 6‑bed area of the ER called the Psych West Pod, which can house adults, adolescents, or children.

Nursing staff cross‑train to all three areas and must be positive, outgoing, and possess strong organizational and leadership skills to assess patient status.

• Provide safe, age‑appropriate care for psychiatric patients.
• Observe patients and assist with activities of daily living (ADLs).
• Maintain a safe and clean environment, perform basic nursing care, and document observations and reporting.
• Assist with admissions, discharges, and transfers as needed.
• Use strong organizational and leadership skills to assess patient status.

• High School Diploma, GED equivalent, or high school certificate.
• 1‑3 years of experience.
• Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification from the Maryland Board of Nursing.
• American Heart Association CPR certification.
• Basic employment skills and entry‑level knowledge.
