Vocational & Recreation Specialist – Autism Program

Boston Higashi School is looking for a creative, energetic, and dependable Vocational & Recreation Specialist to help children and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) develop practical life skills, confidence, independence, and experience in the community.

This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys teaching through real-world experiences, creating activities, and helping students discover what they are capable of accomplishing.

You'll work directly with students through vocational projects, recreational activities, community outings, and structured learning experiences while collaborating with educators and other specialists throughout the school.

Prior experience working with autism is preferred, but not required. Training is provided.

School Year:
Monday–Friday, 1:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m.

Vacation Program – approximately 8 weeks per year:
Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:15 p.m.

This position follows a 220-day annual work schedule.

• Develop and lead hands-on vocational, recreational, and life-skills activities
• Help students build independence, teamwork, confidence, and workplace readiness
• Create on-campus and community-based learning experiences
• Support students in practicing practical skills they can use at school, at work, and in the community
• Lead structured recreational activities, special projects, and Vacation Program activities
• Adapt activities based on students' individual abilities and goals
• Participate in community outings and vocational experiences with students
• Collaborate with teachers, residential staff, therapists, psychologists, and other professionals
• Help create a positive, structured, and engaging learning environment
• Maintain vocational materials, supplies, and equipment
• Receive training in Boston Higashi School's Daily Life Therapy® approach

We're looking for someone who enjoys working directly with students and is creative, organized, patient, energetic, and willing to jump in and participate.

• Bachelor's degree required
• Degrees in Education, Psychology, Human Services, Social Work, Sociology, Recreation, Rehabilitation, Behavioral Sciences, or a related field are especially relevant
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to organize and lead activities for individuals and groups
• Comfortable participating in active recreational and community-based programming
• Valid driver's license
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team
• Willingness to learn about autism and Boston Higashi School's educational approach

• Experience working with children or young adults
• Experience in vocational education, job coaching, recreation, camps, community programs, human services, or similar settings
• Experience working with individuals with autism or developmental disabilities
