As a trusted partner across a wide range of industries, we are seeking an experienced Chief Boiler Operator Engineer to provide safe, reliable plant leadership and exceptional client service.

Position Summary

The Chief Boiler Operator Engineer is responsible for the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of the assigned boiler plant. This role leads licensed operators, coordinates staffing and inspections, maintains required records, supports preventive maintenance, and serves as the primary liaison among the client, plant personnel, and Frank I. Rounds Company management.

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum License

    Required:

    Massachusetts Second Class Engineer license
  • Valid Massachusetts Second Class Engineer license or higher.
  • Demonstrated experience operating and overseeing commercial or industrial boiler systems and related equipment.
  • Working knowledge of Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 146 and applicable plant safety requirements.
  • Ability to lead licensed operators, coordinate 24/7 coverage, and communicate professionally with clients and management.
  • Ability to maintain accurate operating, inspection, scheduling, and payroll records.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Direct the safe, reliable, and efficient operation and monitoring of the assigned boiler plant.
  • Supervise plant boiler operators and provide day-to-day leadership for assigned crews.
  • Operate boilers and related equipment in accordance with established procedures.
  • Read and document meters, gauges, and operating conditions at required intervals.
  • Open and close valves and make basic control adjustments as operating conditions require.
  • Perform routine operator maintenance and promptly identify conditions requiring specialized service.
  • Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe plant and work area.
  • Monitor operating systems to identify faulty or unsafe equipment and initiate appropriate corrective action.
  • Complete daily operating logs and maintain the Massachusetts Engineer's Logbook as required.
  • Communicate clearly and consistently with the client, Frank I. Rounds Company management, and plant operators.
  • Report equipment deficiencies, abnormal conditions, and safety concerns to the client and document them in required logs.
  • Perform all duties required under Chapter 146 of the Massachusetts General Laws and other applicable regulations.
  • Ensure operators under this role’s supervision comply fully with Chapter 146 licensing, logging, and operating requirements.
  • Coordinate annual service and required state or insurance inspections with the client’s primary contact or facilities management team, the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services, and the applicable insurance carrier.
  • Develop and maintain operator shift schedules and ensure continuous 24/7 licensed coverage for the assigned plant.
  • Maintain payroll timesheet records and submit them to Frank I. Rounds Company management weekly.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the company and the client, responding professionally to client needs and concerns.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by Frank I. Rounds Company management.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to remain active and attentive throughout the work shift.
  • Ability to lift and carry parts, tools, or boxes weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to ascend and descend ladders and safely reach, operate, or adjust valves and levers.
  • Ability to work safely in mechanical spaces and around operating boiler equipment while using required personal protective equipment.
