Under the direction of the Building Principal and Director of Special Services, the Special Education Teacher develops and provides specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities.

• Master’s Degree in Speech and Language Sciences or related field. Illinois Teaching Certification in Speech and Language Pathology.
• Understanding and experience with curriculum design, planning and instruction.
• Strong communication skills (written and oral).

• Deliver quality language instruction/interventions in voice, fluency, language, development and articulation in accordance with IEPs of assigned caseload.
• Skilled in administration and interpretation of formal and informal diagnostic assessment instruments for students with speech and language disabilities.
• Working knowledge of state and federal Special Education Law.
• Travel between schools within assigned area, carrying up to 25 pounds of material.
• Evaluate and assess student progress against instructional objectives.
• Act as IEP Manager for assigned students and coordinate IEP implementation with general education staff.
• Develop, select and modify instructional plans and materials to meet needs of all students; design individual and small group instruction.
• Articulate curriculum across grade levels.
• Maintain appropriate records and follow required procedures and practices.
• Manage classroom organization and supervise students in various school-related settings.
• Communicate and interact with students, parents, staff and community.
• Assist classroom teachers in curriculum and instructional modification needs.
• Coordinate instruction with other school teachers.
• Assist in administering diagnostic assessments and academic progress planning.
• Work cooperatively with administration to schedule meetings.
• Knowledge of Special Education research, trends, and best practices.
• Engage learners in differentiated learning experiences, managing multiple instructional activities.
• Monitor pacing of instruction and budget class time efficiently.
• Perform duties as assigned.

• Plan and demonstrate practices that reflect knowledge of content and instructional practices specific to discipline.
• Seek knowledge of students’ backgrounds, cultures, skills, language proficiency, interests and special needs.
• Develop instructional outcomes of appropriate rigor and suitable for students, using diverse learning methods aligned to Common Core Standards.
• Use resources available through school or district to enhance knowledge.
• Design learning experiences aligned to instructional outcomes, address Common Core Standards and engage students.
• Plan assessments aligned to outcomes; use results to plan future instruction.
• Maintain friendly and respectful interactions with students.
• Develop a classroom culture of commitment to learning; engage students consistently.
• Manage instructional groups, materials and supplies consistently; students follow routines.
• Monitor student behavior and respond appropriately and respectfully.
• Ensure classroom safety and accessibility; use physical resources effectively, including technology.
• Communicate clear instructional purpose, directions and procedures.
• Use high‑quality questions/prompts; engage all students in discussion.
• Align lessons to outcomes and standards, pacing appropriately.
• Use assessments to support instruction; give regular, accurate feedback.
• Modify lessons when needed, respond to student questions and interests.
• Reflect on lessons accurately; suggest improvements.
• Maintain accurate records for instructional and non‑instructional purposes.
• Communicate frequently with families; engage them in instructional program.
• Participate in professional community and district events; maintain positive relationships.
• Engage in professional development; share information; accept feedback.
• Display high level of ethics and professionalism; comply with regulations.

• Effective verbal and written communication; instruct students; communicate with parents and colleagues.
• Maintain emotional control under stress.
• Use web‑based programs, e‑mail and technology.

• Indoor classroom exposure to student noise, lawn mowing, music, odors of food, mowed grass and possible communicable diseases.
• Outdoor schoolyard exposure to temperatures (hot, warm, cool, cold) and mowed grass.
• Regular work attendance.

• At least 1 year of relevant experience preferred.
• Master’s Degree preferred.
• Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
