Salary: $50.05 per hour (Full‑time)

Job Description

The Village of Rantoul, a growing community in Champaign County, is looking for a full‑time Lineman. Under the direction of a Line Foreman, the successful candidate will maintain and repair electrical lines throughout the Village. Responsibilities include installing overhead lines, maintaining substations, trimming trees, managing equipment, and responding to emergencies.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least three years of experience with construction and maintenance of electrical lines
  • Completion of Apprentice Lineman training
  • Valid State of Illinois CDL‑A vehicle operator's license
  • Knowledge of hazards associated with electrical distribution system work and standard safety measures
  • Understanding of installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical distribution systems
  • Proficiency with tools, equipment, and machinery used in electrical line construction and maintenance
Requirements

  • Climb utility poles and work from an aerial truck
  • Work under inclement weather conditions
  • Operate and maintain machinery, vehicles, equipment, and tools
  • Detect safety hazards and implement corrective actions
  • Construct, maintain, and repair primary and secondary electrical service lines and substations
  • Respond to emergency calls 24 hours a day and on weekends as needed
  • Follow verbal and written instructions
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Work independently and as part of a team
Essential Functions
  • Install new electrical lines, set poles, assemble and hang crossarms, transformers, and other hardware, and string new wire; connect transformers and secondary lines; install underground lines
  • Maintain existing electrical lines; repair or replace crossarms, insulators, transformers, and other hardware; relocate or replace lines to increase capacity
  • Respond to emergency callouts related to storm damage, power outages, broken street lights, or other issues; locate problems, determine appropriate action, and make repairs or call for assistance
  • Operate and perform minor maintenance on machinery such as bucket trucks, backhoes, trenchers, and other equipment used in the electrical system; notify foreman of equipment problems; clean, grease, and inspect fuel levels on machinery
  • Trim trees obstructing electrical lines; cut limbs, top trees, or remove trees entirely; clean up debris when work is completed
  • Expand and/or update existing substations; grade ground; lay underground piping; pour concrete for substation pads; install transformers, regulators, and breakers; build substation towers; maintain and repair substations
  • Complete work orders from the Electric Department for temporary and permanent house service and security lights; investigate low‑voltage problems reported by customers
  • Service light fixtures at parks; install and maintain overhead lines, underground lines, and electrical meters; replace bulbs, ballasts, and wiring in light structures
