Job Summary
The Disease Intervention Specialist (DIS) Trainer plays a crucial role in training tribal and state DIS workforce segments within tribal and state public health departments. This role is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing various educational and training programs to build capacity and facilitate continuous learning and growth.
Essential Functions- Assess tribal and state DIS workforce segment needs using surveys, interviews, focus groups, and communications with employees, managers, and supervisors.
- Coordinate with tribal and state public health staff to develop culturally relevant DIS trainings.
- Develop unique training programs to fulfill specific needs, including epidemiology, DIS skills, informatics, cultural engagement, outbreak response in tribal communities, and other capacity‑building topics.
- Create, acquire, and/or adapt training procedure manuals, guides, and course material.
- Present training and development programs using various formats such as group discussion, lecture, simulations, videos, webinars, etc.
- Maintain records of training and development activities, attendance results, test/assessment results, and retraining requirements.
- Maintain knowledge of the latest trends in epidemiology, tribal and state relationships, DIS, and informatics.
- Assign, monitor, and document mandatory compliance training.
- Prepare and implement training budget, maintain records, and report expenses.
- Collaborate closely with program manager, department director, tribal, state, and other stakeholders to align training and engagement initiatives with organizational goals and outbreak response.
- Assess the effectiveness of training programs through evaluation methods such as pre‑post training assessments, feedback surveys, and performance metrics, using this feedback to continually improve and refine training initiatives.
- Connect current DIS structures to tribal programs to increase workforce capacity to perform disease intervention services.
- Participate in Core Connections training and apply GPTLHB Core Connections concepts and practices in work.
- Familiarity and/or experience working with American Indian populations and respect for and knowledge of traditional, cultural, and spiritual practices of diverse American Indian communities, as well as ability to work with other culturally and ethnically diverse populations.
- Ability to resolve issues with other departments and coworkers without direct supervision.
- Exercise flexibility to alter plans/routines when situations require and continue to perform without projecting stress or frustration that would adversely affect the work environment.
- Maintain a flexible work schedule, including evenings, weekends, overnight or extended travel as necessary.
- Effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations to community members, relatives, and employees of the organization.
- Proficiency with computer programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other Internet technologies.
- Valid driver’s license must be kept current; certificates, credentials or licenses must be kept current and consistent with applicable federal, state, and/or grant regulations.
Education/Relevant
Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and one (1) year of experience, or associate’s degree and three (3) years’ experience, or high school diploma or GED and five (5) years of progressively responsible experience.
Employment is contingent upon the outcome of required criminal background checks and pre‑employment drug screen. The GPTLHB is a tribal organization that follows tribal preference laws; preference will be given to qualified Indian/Tribal candidates over qualified non‑native candidates in hiring decisions if all other qualifications are equal.
Compliance with the Employee Health Procedure is a condition of employment. Applicants must agree to comply with all job‑related health screenings and immunizations prior to first day of employment, including MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Influenza, T‑dap, and COVID‑19 vaccination.
