Prosecution Investigator

Position Objective

The role of the Prosecution Investigator is to assist Prosecutors in the States Attorney’s Office in their investigative needs by investigating facts of cases where law enforcement has previously made an arrest or has requested that a warrant be issued for an arrest for a violation of law.

• Investigate all assigned cases for the complete facts.
• Review interviews with witnesses, suspects and victims contained in reports provided by law enforcement. Locate and interview additional witnesses, suspects and victims that law enforcement failed to locate and interview. Prioritization of interviews.
• Seek supplemental information that may be omitted from law enforcement reports.
• Seek supplemental information regarding defendants for prior bad act evidence.
• Prepare detailed reports to document investigations.
• Analyze the value of evidence in the prosecution’s and defense’s case.
• Understand constitutional issues related to criminal investigations.
• Have knowledge of audio/video recordings and digital photography.
• Serve subpoenas.
• Case management and assignment prioritization.
• Demonstrate a good working knowledge of federal, state, city and county laws and ordinances as well as office policies and procedures.
• Fostering positive working relationships with outside agencies and organizations.

• Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services or Law Enforcement preferred; or a combination of relevant experience with HS education or GED.
• Law enforcement or investigative experience preferred.

• Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and quantitative productivity standards.
• Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state and local standards.
• This position frequently remains stationary for long periods of time and needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
• Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery such as a calculator, copy machine and printer.
• Must be able to move up to 20 pounds unassisted, and move 40 pounds with assistance.
• Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively on telephone, in-person and in writing.
• The Prosecution Investigator should possess sufficient physical capability to overcome or restrain an assaultive individual.

• Most work is performed indoors in an office where noise and interruptions often occur.
• Must walk to the Pennington County Courthouse court appearances in all weather, carrying multiple files.
• Overtime hours may be required to adequately prepare for trials and complicated hearings.
• Some travel may be required for training, meetings, mental commitment hearings and appearances as needed in other jurisdictions.
• The Prosecution Investigator may be exposed to hazardous conditions, extreme weather conditions, infectious diseases, air and water borne pathogens. Due to the nature of the work, the Prosecution Investigator may be exposed to mentally unstable individuals as well as assaultive and combative individuals. Will have unsupervised contact with individuals incarcerated in local, state and federal correctional facilities.

Health – Pennington County has a self-funded health care program for employees and their dependents. Health Insurance and Prescription Drug is covered through Wellmark (Blue Cross Blue Shield). Two plans are offered: a traditional PPO plan with co-pay structure and a high deductible plan with higher deductible/out-of-pocket maximums.

Dental – Dental coverage is provided through Delta Dental of South Dakota. 100% of usual and customary charges for preventive and diagnostic procedures are covered, after a $50 deductible per individual / $150 per family.
