Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Level III NICU position requiring a compact or SD RN license and strong neonatal critical care skills.

Responsibilities
  • Work in a hospital-based Level III NICU with a patient census of 13–16 neonates
  • Care for neonates of all gestational ages with diagnoses including low birth weight, need for high frequency ventilation, nitric oxide, total body cooling, and feeders/growers
  • No ECMO or cardiac surgery cases are included
  • RN-to-patient ratios range from 1:1 to 1:4
  • 12-hour variable shifts with the potential for mostly weekend assignments and on-call for low census
  • Floating may be required to PICU, Pediatrics, Postpartum, Newborn Nursery, and Adult Constant Observation
  • Uses Epic EMR (Epic experience preferred but not required), Alaris pumps, and Omnicell medication dispensing
  • Support provided by 24/7 neonatologists, NNPs, RTs, lactation consultants, and charge RN
  • Provide comprehensive nursing care for critically ill and premature newborns
  • Unit features 28 beds in a Level III NICU at a teaching hospital and Level II trauma center
  • General traveler orientation plus one day and one night of unit orientation provided
  • Expect to cover two of four major holidays as assigned
  • Pre-approved time off only
  • Scrub color is navy
  • Free parking is available on-site
  • First-time travelers are considered with at least 2 years of recent NICU experience
  • Travelers may be renewed based on performance and need
Requirements
  • Active SD or compact RN license in good standing
  • Minimum 1.5 years NICU experience required (2 years for first-time travelers)
  • Current BLS, NRP, and PALS certifications required; STABLE certification preferred
  • Completion of an accredited nursing program is required
  • Proficiency in vent management, IV starts, chest tubes, IV medication titration, and neonatal resuscitation is preferred
  • Epic EMR experience preferred; notify if experience is lacking for approval consideration
  • Candidates must live more than 100 miles from the facility
  • Former permanent staff must wait one year before returning as travelers
