Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for an ICU position in Rapid City, SD, requiring a minimum of 2 years of ICU experience, TNCC certification, and Epic proficiency.

• Mixed ICU setting with 39 beds divided into pods: MICU, SICU, CICU, and TICU — travelers will not float to the CVICU side unless experienced in that specialty
• Complex patient population including surgical, medical, cardiac, neuro, and trauma cases with diagnoses such as ARDS, MI, CVA/TIA, COVID, post-cardiac cath, post-surgical, and multiple system trauma
• Cardiac experience (CABG/TAVR, 24–48 hrs post-op) is preferred but not required; fresh open heart cases are assigned to permanent staff only
• Patient ratios are acuity-dependent: 1:1, 1:2, or rarely 1:3
• EMR:
  Epic (required); also uses Alaris pumps (transitioning to Baxter) and Omnicell
• 12-hour day shifts, 48 hours per week
• Every other weekend rotation (not guaranteed)
• No on-call responsibilities
• Floating is uncommon but possible to any adult floor including Med/Surg or Tele at a 1:4 ratio when overstaffed
• First-time travelers will not be considered; a minimum of one prior travel assignment is required
• Former permanent staff must wait 1 year before returning to this facility as a traveler
• Unit support includes 1–2 CNAs per unit plus a mobility float aide, 2 charge RNs overseeing all ICUs, a resource nurse (staffing dependent), 24/7 Respiratory Therapy, and robust physician coverage (3 Intensivists on days, 2 on nights plus an APP on nights)
• Orientation consists of a hospital orientation, one 12-hour shift, and one 8-hour shift on the ICU
• May occasionally be expected to precept nursing students
• No RTO will be approved during holidays or the Sturgis Bike Rally (first 3 weeks of August); up to 7 days of RTO may be approved otherwise, with the requirement that any extension accommodates a full 13-week contract

• Active RN license — South Dakota (SD) Board of Nursing license or a Compact RN license currently in hand
• Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, and TNCC (must be obtained prior to start if not already held)
• Minimum 2 years of ICU experience, excluding travel assignments, is strongly preferred; candidates with at least 1.5 years of ICU experience (excluding travel) plus significant RN experience outside the ICU may be considered on a case-by-case basis
• Epic EMR experience required
• Proficiency with IV medications (vasopressors, sedation, paralytics), hemodynamic lines, proning, ventilator management, and telemetry
• Strong critical thinking, assessment skills, and ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
• Experience with Impella, IABP, and CRRT strongly preferred
• Must reside at least 100 miles from any Monument Health facility
• Two professional references dated within the past year are required for consideration
