Job Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced travel RN for a mixed ICU position in Rapid City, SD, requiring a minimum of 1.5–2 years of ICU experience, Epic proficiency, and active TNCC certification.
Responsibilities- Mixed ICU setting with 39 beds divided into pods: MICU, SICU, CICU, and TICU — travelers would not float to the CVICU side unless experienced in that specialty
- Complex ICU patient population including surgical, medical, cardiac, neuro, and trauma cases — diagnoses include ARDS, MI, CVA/TIA, COVID, post-cardiac cath, post-surgical, and multi-system trauma
- Heavy trauma patient volume
- Cardiac experience preferred, particularly with CABG/TAVR and 24–48 hours post-op care, though not required
- Patient ratios of 1:1 or 1:2, with 1:3 rare and acuity dependent
- Epic EMR required; also uses Alaris pumps (transitioning to Baxter) and Omnicell
- 12-hour day shifts, 48 hours per week
- Every other weekend rotation (not guaranteed)
- No on-call responsibilities
- Floating is uncommon but possible to adult floors including Med/Surg or Tele at a 1:4 ratio when overstaffed
- First-time travelers will not be considered — a minimum of one prior travel assignment is required
- Former permanent staff must wait at least one year before returning to the facility as a traveler
- Unit support includes 1–2 CNAs per unit plus a mobility float aide, two charge RNs overseeing all ICUs, a resource nurse (staffing dependent), 24/7 respiratory therapy, phlebotomy for peripheral draws, and physician coverage with 3 intensivists on days and 2 on nights plus an APP on nights
- Orientation consists of one hospital orientation, one 12-hour shift, and one 8-hour shift in the ICU
- May be expected to precept nursing students
- No RTO approved during holidays or the Sturgis Bike Rally (first three weeks of August)
- Time off requests of up to 7 days may be approved, but assignments must be extended to accommodate a full 13-week contract
- Scrubs: navy required

- Active RN license — SD license or compact license required
- Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, and TNCC (required — must be obtained prior to start)
- Minimum 1.5–2 years of ICU experience, excluding travel experience; candidates with 1.5 years of ICU experience plus significant RN experience outside of ICU may be considered with management approval
- Epic EMR experience required
- Proficiency with IV medications including vasopressors, sedation, and paralytics
- Experience with hemodynamic lines, ventilator management, proning, and telemetry monitoring
- Impella, IABP, and CRRT experience strongly preferred
- Strong critical thinking, clinical assessment skills, and ability to work in a fast-paced, all-critical-patient environment
- Must reside at least 100 miles from any Monument Health facility
- Two professional references dated within the past year required for consideration
