American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for an inpatient Behavioral Health unit in Rapid City, SD, requiring Epic experience and the ability to work with both pediatric and adult psychiatric patients on 12-hour night shifts.

Job Details

• Inpatient Behavioral Health unit located at an off-site facility approximately 15 minutes from the main hospital campus,

• 52-bed unit serving psychiatric patients across three floors, including children and adolescents (ages 5-17) and adults,

• Diagnoses include depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, psychosis, and adjustment disorder - dementia, severe autism, forensic, and inmate patients are not seen on this unit,

• Patient ratio is 1:8 RN-to-patient with a tech;
Psych Techs maintain a 1:5-6 ratio,

• Facility occasionally treats violent or aggressive patients; physical restraint capability may be required,

• Primary charting system is Epic; experience is required unless CRT approval is obtained,

• Medications dispensed via Omnicell,

• Scheduled for 12-hour night shifts ), with the possibility of variable shifts including 8-hour days ), evenings ), or nights ), as block scheduling is not accommodated,

• Combo weeks may include two 12-hour and two 8-hour shifts,

• Every other weekend rotation required, which may include Friday, Saturday, or Sunday,

• Low-census on-call is possible depending on patient acuity,

• RNs may float between the three floors within the off-site Behavioral Health facility,

Job Requirements

• Active RN license in South Dakota (SD) or a compact state currently in hand,

• Current BLS certification required; CPI certification preferred prior to start but may be obtained during the assignment,

• Minimum nursing education from a board-approved nursing program,

• Prior psychiatric nursing experience required,

• Epic EMR experience required (CRT approval needed if not experienced),

• Ability to perform physical restraints and take-downs on agitated patients when necessary,

• Proficiency in verbal de-escalation, group didactic facilitation, and strong communication skills,

• 2 professional references dated within the past year required for consideration,

• DOB and SSN required for consideration,

Additional Information

• Responsibilities include medication administration (PO and injectable), care plan evaluation, admission screenings, nursing assessments, minor wound care, EKGs (training provided), glucometer use, telephone/verbal orders, vital signs, Columbia Suicide Risk Screen, end-of-shift reporting, patient belongings logging, and discharge planning,

• Comprehensive support available on unit 24/7 including security personnel with tasers, panic alarms worn by all staff, cameras throughout common areas, on-call MD coverage, Behavioral Health Emergency Response Team (BERT), charge nurse, and resource nurse overnight,

• Lab draws routine labs daily;
Behavioral Health staff are responsible for STAT lab draws,

• Orientation consists of 2 facility orientation shifts, 1 shift of eLearning modules, and 2 departmental orientation shifts,

• Two of four major holidays are required; if one of Thanksgiving or Christmas is worked, the other is given off,

• RTO is not approved during the Sturgis Bike Rally (first three weeks of August),

• Scrubs color required is navy; free parking is available on-site,

• Candidates must reside more than 100 miles from any facility in the health system to be eligible,

• Former permanent staff must wait a full year before returning as a traveler,

• Travelers should be aware they will work with pediatric patients (ages 5-17) in addition to adult patients
