The Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as caregiver to the resident during the scheduled work period in long term care. Serves as a member of the nursing team, providing resident-centered nursing care and daily living assistance under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). Responsibilities include delivering age-appropriate care, following infection prevention and control policies, using personal protective equipment, and assisting with basic health care needs such as bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, vital signs, and psychosocial support.
- Assists residents with transfer, repositioning, and walking using proper techniques and equipment, and provides range of motion and passive exercises.
- Performs food preparation and dining tasks, ensuring a positive dining experience and providing meals, snacks, water, and supplements as appropriate.
- Aids nursing staff with procedures when required and documents resident interactions and outcomes.
- Communicates changes in resident condition or concerns to the charge nurse.
- Collects non‑invasive body fluid specimens and records vital signs.
- Provides housekeeping and laundry services to maintain resident living areas.
- Facilitates wellness and recreational programs, encouraging resident participation.
- May participate in departmental or organizational committees and task forces as needed.
- High school graduate or GED preferred, but not required.
- Minimum age of 16.
- Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in long‑term care preferred.
- Required Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing, or state certified CNA within four months of hire by enrolling in a training program or completing certification through endorsement. CNA training and certification are provided by the facility.
- Successfully completes yearly department‑specific competency testing and maintains a record of continuing education credits, with a minimum of 12 hours annually.
- Maintains all department‑specific required certifications.
- When applicable, certified and registered with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry.
- Depending on facility duties, may be classified as a Sanford Category II Driver, requiring a valid driver’s license, vehicle report, and medical qualification for essential driving functions per Sanford Driving Policy.
