Position: Licensed Practical Nurse (RCCF)

Job Summary

The Department of Corrections of South Dakota is hiring a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to provide skilled nursing care for incarcerated offenders at the Rapid City Women's Prison Facility (RCCF). This is a full‑time, 40‑hour per week position with flexible scheduling, including night, weekend, and holiday shifts.

Salary: $25.73 to $34.03 per hour, depending on experience.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain accurate and timely medical records for offenders.
  • Provide standardized patient education within established nursing guidelines.
  • Transcribe reports at shift changes and preserve confidentiality.
  • Administer medications, assist with treatments, and collaborate on treatment plans.
  • Assist physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners with minor medical and surgical procedures.
  • Ensure ordering and restocking of medications and supplies.
  • Participate in restraining offenders for medical reasons when required.
  • Observe and report the physical and emotional condition of offenders during sick call and emergencies.
  • Promote safety and security of the clinical environment, including contraband control and key management.
  • Operate clinical equipment as available in the assigned work unit.
  • Inform supervisors of any security or safety violations through proper reporting.
  • Attend required training programs such as Basic Training Academy and Threat Pattern Recognition self‑defense course.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Current, valid license as a Licensed Practical Nurse from the South Dakota Board of Nursing.
Required Competencies
  • Daily patient treatment in diverse settings.
  • Adherence to patient confidentiality standards.
  • Rapid response to emergency situations involving offenders and medical conditions.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Reading, comprehension, and fluent verbal and written English.
  • Strong decision‑making and detail orientation.
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts on a full‑time basis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Intravenous certification.
  • Long‑term and acute care experience.
  • Prior LPN experience in a correctional environment.
Conditions of Employment
  • Successful completion of a background investigation, urine drug screening, and tuberculosis screening.
  • Ability to carry Oleoresin Capsicum spray if desired, including successful written and practical self‑defense exam and CPR certification per AHA guidelines.
  • Compliance with the state’s drug‑free workplace policy.
  • This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.
  • This position is eligible for Veterans’ Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
  • The State of South Dakota does not sponsor work visas; all hires must verify U.S. work‑eligibility.
