This position provides skilled nursing care for incarcerated offenders in various clinic settings at the Rapid City Women’s Prison Facility.
What You Will Do- Document patient information accurately and timely to maintain comprehensive inmate medical records.
- Transcribe reports at shift change.
- Provide standardized patient education within established nursing guidelines.
- Preserve patient confidentiality.
- Provide physical care and treatments, administer medications, collaborate on treatment plans, employ infection control measures, provide crisis intervention, interview, and triage offenders, and perform patient and staff instruction.
- Assist physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners with minor medical and surgical procedures.
- Ensure ordering and restocking of medications and supplies.
- Occasionally participate in restraining an offender for medical reasons.
- Observe and report the physical and emotional condition of offenders during triage, sick call, and emergency situations.
- Perform physical and emotional assessments of offenders during triage, sick call, and emergency situations, using basic nursing and assessment skills and protocols.
- Promote and be accountable for safety and security of the clinical environment through conscientious observations and sensitive contraband control.
- Operate a variety of clinical equipment as dictated by the assigned work unit.
- Inform supervisor of any violations of security or safety through the report writing process.
- Attend training programs as assigned, including completion of the Basic Training Academy and Threat Pattern Recognition self‑defense course.
- Work any shift, including weekends and holidays.
- Current, valid license as a Registered Nurse from the South Dakota Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
- Effectively treat patients daily in a variety of settings.
- Follow patient confidentiality standards.
- Respond to emergency situations involving offenders and/or medical situations.
- Exhibit excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Read and comprehend English language.
- Communicate fluently in English orally and in writing.
- Demonstrate discernment and decision‑making skills.
- Follow instructions and pay attention to detail.
- Work a variety of shifts on a full‑time basis.
- Correctional nursing experience.
- Acute care or long‑term nursing experience.
- Charge nurse and/or supervisory experience.
- Successful completion of a background investigation, urine drug screen, and tuberculosis screening.
- Completion of a written and practical self‑defense exam and CPR to AHA guidelines.
- Physical ability to successfully complete practical self‑defense requirements.
