American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for an ICU position requiring 2+ years of ICU experience (excluding travel), a SD or compact RN license, and prior travel assignment history.
Requirements
- Active RN license (South Dakota or Compact) currently in hand
- Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, and TNCC (required prior to arrival)
- Minimum 2 years of ICU experience required, excluding travel assignments
- Completion of an approved nursing education program
- Epic EMR experience required
- Experience with IV medications including vasopressors, sedation, and paralytics required
- Experience with hemodynamic lines, proning, ventilator management, and telemetry required
- Strong critical thinking and assessment skills required
- Impella, IABP, and CRRT experience strongly preferred
- Must be comfortable working a 48-hour per week contract
Responsibilities
- Work in a 39-bed mixed ICU unit encompassing MICU, SICU, CICU, and TICU pods
- Care for complex ICU patients including surgical, medical, cardiac, neuro, and heavy trauma populations
- Common diagnoses include ARDS, MI, CVA/TIA, COVID, post-cardiac cath, and multi-system trauma
- Cardiac experience preferred, including 24-48 hr post-op CABG/TAVR care
- RN to patient ratios of 1:1, 1:2, and rarely 1:3 based on acuity
- Schedule consists of 12-hour night shifts totaling 48 hours per week
- Weekend rotation attempted for every other weekend, though not guaranteed
- No on-call requirements
- Floating is uncommon but may occur to adult floors including Medsurg/Tele at a 1:4 ratio when overstaffed
- Would not float to CVICU unless experienced in that specialty
- Uses Epic charting system, Alaris pumps (transitioning to Baxter pumps in October), and Omnicell
- Provide direct care to critically ill ICU patients across multiple specialties in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
- Unit support includes 1-2 CNAs plus a mobility float aide, charge nurses overseeing all ICUs, 24/7 respiratory therapy, and on-site intensivists and APPs
- Peripheral blood draws performed by phlebotomy team
- ICU RNs are responsible for placing all midlines
- May be expected to precept nursing students
- Orientation includes hospital orientation plus one 12-hour and one 8-hour shift in the ICU
- Navy scrub color required
- Free parking provided
- No RTO permitted during holidays or during the Sturgis Bike Rally (first three weeks of August)
- Time off requests up to 7 days may be approved but contract must be extended to accommodate a full 13-week term
- Minimum one prior travel assignment required; first-time travelers will not be considered
- Candidates must reside at least 100 miles from the facility
- Permanent staff must wait one year before returning in a travel role
