American Traveler is hiring an RN for a PCU position requiring 1.5 years of general nursing experience and an active SD or compact RN license.
Details- Work in a 44-bed Progressive Care Unit (PCU) at a hospital
- Mixed acuity unit including Intermediate Care, Telemetry, and Med Surg level patients
- Care for direct admits, ED admits, and post cath lab patients
- Manage cardiac diagnoses including MI, NSTEMI, STEMI, CHF, dysrhythmias, pacemaker malfunctions, and epicardial pacers
- Serve as backup for the stroke unit and medical overflow
- Provide step-down level care for post cardiac/vascular, post-cardiac cath, post open heart surgery, post TAVR, post EP study, and post pacemaker insertion patients
- RN to patient ratio is typically 1:4, with occasional 1:3 based on acuity
- Supported by CNAs at a 1:5-8 ratio, phlebotomy for peripheral draws, RT coverage 24/7, and hospitalist coverage in-facility 24/7
- Tele techs oversee cardiac monitoring with RN confirming strips at 6am and 6pm
- Uses Epic EMR, Alaris pumps, and Omnicell
- 12-hour shifts, scheduled or
- Variable shift positions may include both day and night scheduling with at least two days off when transitioning between shifts
- Weekend rotation required every other weekend
- Holiday coverage required every other holiday
- No on-call requirements
- May float primarily to sister PCU unit, and occasionally to MS/Tele or ICU to care for PCU-level patients
- Active RN license (SD or Compact) currently in hand
- Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
- Minimum 1.5 years of general nursing experience with 1 year specific to PCU required
- First-time travelers considered only with 2+ years of experience
- Completion of an accredited nursing education program
- Experience with cardiac procedural recovery (CABG/TAVR/post cardiac cath) required
- Experience with MI pharmacology and titratable cardiac/vasoactive drips (Cardizem, Amiodarone, Nitro, Levo, Dopamine) required
- Experience with heparin drips, cardiac rhythm interpretation, and chest tube management required
- TNK administration experience preferred
- Epic EMR experience preferred
- Orientation includes 2 partial days of education plus 3 twelve-hour shifts on the unit
- May be expected to precept nursing students
- Navy blue scrub color required
- Free parking provided
- Time off requests approved for up to 7 days, with full week requests requiring extension
- No time off approved during the first three weeks of August annually due to the Sturgis Bike Rally
- Must reside at least 100 miles from any facility within the health system to be eligible
- Local candidates are not accepted for this position
- Permanent staff must wait one full year before returning as a travel RN
- Facility is known for being traveler-friendly and welcomes contract renewals
