American Traveler is hiring a PCU RN for a mixed-acuity Ortho Neuro Surgical unit requiring at least 1 year of nursing experience and a South Dakota or compact RN license.
Details- Work in a 64-bed Ortho Neuro Surgical (ONS) unit spread across 2 floors in a hospital setting
- Mixed-acuity unit combining Intermediate Care, Telemetry, and Med Surg patient types
- Care for pre/post-surgical, CVA, seizure, cellulitis, influenza, UTI, pneumonia, COPD, CHF, renal failure, hepatic failure, GI disorders, soft tissue injury, minor fracture, and DVT patients
- Manage medication administration, titratable vasoactive drips, TPN/tube feeding, and blood product transfusions
- Utilize peripheral IV, midline, PICC, and central line access, chest tubes, NG tubes, drains, and urinary/fecal collection devices
- Provide wound care and monitor telemetry patients
- Post neuro-intervention patient experience preferred, with training and resources provided if not previously experienced
- RN to patient ratio is 1:4, including for Med Surg assignments; CNA ratio is 1:8
- Pod structure with 8 patients per pod staffed by 2 RNs and 1 nurse aide
- Unit supported by dedicated charge nurses per floor, a flex nurse (10a-10p daily), resource/nurse clinician support, phlebotomy, RT, and hospitalist services
- No IV/VAT team support available
- Uses Epic EMR (strongly preferred), Alaris, and Omnicell systems
- 12-hour day shifts on a 6-week scheduling rotation
- Weekend rotation of up to 4 out of 6 weekends, including Friday, Saturday, and Sunday shifts
- May float to any adult inpatient unit including Med Surg, Ortho/Neuro/Surgical, Heart and Vascular, Oncology, and Observation within scope of practice
- No mandatory on-call requirement
- Active RN license (South Dakota or Compact) required
- Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
- Completion of an accredited nursing education program required
- Minimum 1 year of nursing experience required
- First-time travelers considered if they have more than 1 year of experience and prior Epic EMR experience
- Comfortable accepting Med Surg assignments
- Experience with IMC/stepdown and neuro patient populations preferred
- Ability to read and interpret cardiac strips
- Experience with wound care, line management, and drain/tube management required
- Experience with drip titration including Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, and Levophed (up to 5 mcg) required
- Experience with esmolol or other beta-blocker/antihypertensive drips helpful, though training provided if needed
- Provide direct patient care across a mixed-acuity population including telemetry, intermediate care, and Med Surg assignments
- Receive 2 days of unit/department orientation covering policies, protocols, and department information, plus classroom time with the Nursing Professional Development Team
- Complete 2 orientation shifts on the unit working alongside a preceptor
- May be scheduled for every weekend (WOW) depending on availability
- Time off requests are limited to 1.5 weeks and require contract extension to complete a full 13-week assignment
- Blackout dates apply from approximately August 1-18 due to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, during which no time off is approved
- Holiday RTO requests are not currently being accepted and must be submitted prior to offer
- Candidates must reside at least 100 miles from any Monument Health facility to be eligible
- Local candidates are not accepted for this position
- Former permanent staff must wait a full year before returning as a traveler
- Facility is known for being traveler-friendly with high renewal rates
