American Traveler is hiring an RN for a Progressive Care Unit (Tele) position requiring at least 1 year of PCU/Tele experience and a South Dakota or compact RN license, working 12-hour night shifts.
Details- Work in a 56-bed Progressive Care Unit (PCU/Telemetry) within a hospital setting
- Care for adult patients with diagnoses including CHF, ARF, hepatitis, ESLD, DM, DKA, pneumonia, sepsis, GI bleed, syncope, chest pain, pulmonary emboli, respiratory failure, COPD, arrhythmias, seizure disorders, overdose, and delirium tremens
- RN to patient ratio of 1:4 on PCU/Tele and 1:5 on Med/Surg for both day and night shifts
- CNA support available at a 1:8 ratio on both day and night shifts
- Uses Epic EMR (preferred), Alaris pumps, and Omnicell medication dispensing systems
- Schedule consists of 12-hour night shifts totaling 36 hours per week
- Weekend rotation required every other or 50% of weekends (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) per 4-week schedule
- Holiday coverage required every other holiday during the contract period
- Not scheduled for on-call hours, though low census on-call may occur if hours exceed guaranteed weekly hours or by traveler request
- Floating required to Adult Inpatient Units including Med Surg, Ortho/Neuro/Surgical, Heart and Vascular, Oncology, ICU (based on experience), and Observation, in rotation with other travelers
- Required to attend huddles prior to shift start at 0625 and 1825 in the 7th floor conference room
- Active RN license (South Dakota or Compact) required
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
- Minimum 1 year of PCU or Telemetry RN experience required
- First-time travelers accepted if candidate has more than 2 years of nursing experience
- Completion of a nursing education program approved by a board of nursing required
- Skilled in cardiac and vasoactive drip titration, including Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, and Levophed (up to 5 mcg)
- Proficient in cardiac rhythm interpretation, IV starts, blood product administration, CIWA protocol, drain/tube management, and catheter insertion/management
- Experience with continuous bladder irrigation and chest tube maintenance required
- Epic EMR experience preferred
- Ability to float within scope of practice to other adult inpatient units as needed
- Comfortable working in a team nursing model alongside LPNs, with potential task swapping based on scope of practice
- Provide direct patient care including physical assessments, drip titrations, and management of drains, tubes, and catheters
- Support available includes 24/7 charge nurses, phlebotomy for peripheral draws, resource/flex RNs, respiratory therapy, and in-house hospitalists
- Centralized telemetry monitoring team available 24/7 to assist with rhythm reading and alarm notifications
- Communicate with providers via paging system and secure chat
- Orientation includes 2 days of in-class/online education followed by two 12-hour shifts with a preceptor
- May be expected to precept nursing students
- Monthly audits are conducted for pre/post pain scoring with a 90% compliance requirement
- Navy blue scrubs required for RNs
- Free parking available on-site
- Up to 7 days of requested time off allowed, with contract extension required if a full week cannot be worked to accommodate the 13-week term
- Time off is not permitted during the Sturgis Bike Rally (first 3 weeks of August)
- Travelers must reside at least 100 miles from any facility within the health system, and local candidates are not accepted
- Previous permanent staff must wait 1 year before returning as a traveler
- Facility is known for renewing traveler contracts
