PCU Registered Nurse (RN)

Number of Beds: 56

Experience

Required:

Minimum of 1 year, additional approval needed for candidates with less than 1.5 years.

Responsibilities

Provide care for adult patients with various diagnoses including CHF, ARF, hepatitis, ESLD, DM, DKA, pneumonia, sepsis, GI bleed, syncope, chest pain, pulmonary emboli, respiratory failure, COPD, arrhythmias, seizure disorders, overdose, and delirium tremors.

Maintain patient ratios of 1:4 during day and night shifts.

Conduct thorough physical assessments and demonstrate strong clinical judgment.

Work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment while displaying effective verbal and written communication skills.

Perform advanced nursing skills including cardiac rhythm interpretation, intravenous (IV) starts, blood product administration, and management of various drains and tubes.

Administer medication drips as required, including insulin, heparin, and others (training available for unfamiliar medications).

Participate in patient education and support activities.

Required Certifications

Basic Life Support (BLS)

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) preferred

Required Education

Completion of a nursing education program approved by the board of nursing. Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse in South Dakota.

Skills and Qualifications

Proven experience in a similar acute care environment, particularly in telemetry.

Ability to interpret cardiac rhythms and handle emergent situations.

Comfort working alongside Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and as part of a team nursing model.

A positive attitude, strong team spirit, and adaptability to changes in the work environment.

Knowledge of and adherence to the South Dakota RN Scope of Practice.

Support on the Unit

CNA support with a ratio of 1:8 during both day and night shifts.

Access to a dedicated resource nurse to assist with admissions, discharges, and transfers as staffing allows.

Hospitalist services available 24/7 for patient management.

Centrally monitored telemetry support for reading and alarm notifications, operational 24/7.

Orientation & Scheduling

Initial orientation includes 2 days of in-class and online training followed by 2 twelve-hour shifts with a preceptor.

Weekend rotations to be expected, typically requiring every other weekend availability.

Huddles required before each shift to ensure team communication and coordination.

Additional Notes

Employees are expected to adhere to quality compliance measures, including monthly audits for specific patient care protocols. Candidates should be open to the possibility of providing mentorship to nursing students.
